Hon. R. A. Booth the repnbli
cair candidate for joint senator, is
a man whose business and public
career bespeaks for him the solid
support of the business and
laboring men alike. His whole lile
has been one of close application to
business in which he has been not
only in the position to employ hun
dreds of men in the ordinary walks
of life, but so situated that he
has been enabled to study the re
quirements and needs of the labor
ing men. Standing today at the
head of the largest labor employing
institut'on in Lane county i. e. Booth
Kelley saw mill, he comes in con
tact with the laboring men first,
last and all the time. He is
splendidly educated, a conservative
business man, and one who under
stands the economic measures nec
essary to good government and
beneficial to those who depend upon
their labor. He will receive the
support of every man in Iane
county who has the interest of good
state and national government at
heart, and who realizes that one of
his important duties is to aid in the
betterment of the conditions of the
men who depend upon manual la
bor for a living.
The Guard, following up'its for
mer tactics grossly misrepresented
L. T. Harris in its report of the
candidates here last Saturday. One
Holt who poses as a foreign mis
sionary advocate and who is a
member of the I,ane county citi
zens ticket campaign committee, is
responsible for the report, no doubt
coached by E. R: Skip worth, who
in order to get revenge upon Mr
Hairis for the clever way in which
he (Harris) scorched his silver
tipped wings in his closing re
mark's, put Holt up to bring in the
report, in which he stated that that
the reason hops are low is because
the fanners do not drink enough
beer. This statement is a base
prevarication from beginning to
end, made doubly so coming from
a man who is traveling about the
country soliciting alms for the
starving natives of India. A man
who will sit through, an address
and then go out and make as ma
licious and uncalled for report of
that nature is either mistaken, a
wilful liar or a gentle prevaricator.
If he is the gentleman he would
have people believe him to be he
will apologize to Mr. Harris pub
lically and personally.

The Honorable E. R. Skipwortb
while here last Saturday had two
op three of the old line voters
crowded in a woodshed trying to
bent into them the merits of the
citizens ticket and ostensibly, his
own gigantic worth, and had oc
casion to- allude to the Dingley
bill, aud its shortcomings, likewise
the "great and unnecessary" ex
pense it is to the farmers. Ashe was
warming up to his argument one
of tho farmers suggested that if we
could have "another four years of the
prosperity we have had in the last
four years- we could afford to pay
for the Dingley bill. Skip worth,
hesitated a moment smiled one of
his "intelligent" smiles and
changed the subject.
While In some localities the re
cent sickness of Hon. Ivan Mc
Queen may have a tendency to
lessen his chances for votes, still it
can be safely said that where he is
known his non-appearance on the
canvass will not lessen his chance
for election. Mr. McQueeu is well
posted on the issue now upper
most to. the minds of the American
voter, . is a firm believer in the
principles republicanism, and is
greattenough .to do his duty as an

Hon. R. A. Booth met With
a Fine Reccptiou.
Last Friday the candidates on
the republican aud citizens ticket
reached this city in the afternoon
and held joint discussion, L. T.
Harris, republican nominee for
legislature, E. R. Skipworth, citi
zen nominee for the same honors,
and Levi Geer of this precinct,
also citizen nominee for represen
tative, taking part in joint debate.
Mr. Harris lead and delivered a
fine speech on the national issues.
He was followed by Mr. Skipworih,
who ' put in most of his time in
abusing Mr. Harris, which showed
conclusively to the audience that
he is no match for his young ad
vasary in debate upon the real
issues that confront the American
people, and right there many who
heretofore were not altogether
friendly to republicanism, com
mented to the effect that a man
who was too timid to set before the
people to whom he looked for po
litical support, his ideas on the live
issues of the day, was not a safe
man to send to the legislature, and
the fact oi it is that Mr. Skip
worth's fixed determination to
avoid entering into a dispute with
Mr. Harris on the questions which
today interest the progressive and
intelligent people ot Lane county,
more than the election of Mr. Skip
worth to the legislature, will cause
him the loss of many votes in this
preciuct. Mr. Skipworth is quite
handy with satire and ridicule, but
his ability as a merfsurer of mo
mentous questions is sadly lack
ing, and in this respect he is sen
sible enough to avoid mixing up
with men of Mr. Harris' intelli
gence. Mr. Geer followed, open
ing with a very pretty compliment
to Mr. Harris and then took up
the money question. Upon this he
made a very good speech from a
populist idea, but the trouble is,
the populist idea isn't good, hence
Mr. Geer's speech cannot be taken
seriously by the majority of those
who had the pleasure of listening
to the sturdy farmer, who errs not
from selfish motives but because be
thinks he is right, and when he
sees that he is following a false
god, and that time is now ap
parently near at hand, the people
will find Mr. Geer man enough to
come out and acknowledge his
error. However that acknowledge
ment should be forthcoming before
the people trust legislative meas
ures in his hand, not because he is
not sincere in his belief but be
cause the majority of the voting
population of Lane county sincerely
believe his beliefs to be wrong and
adverse to the best interests of this
country.

A- per date Hon. R. A. Booth,
republican candidate for joint sena
tor, addressed the citizens of this
city Wednesday evening at Mar
tin's hall. The hall was full of en
thusiastic men and women, aud his
address was absorbed by them to a
marked degree. Especially was
this true of the Saginaw mill
hands, who were out almost to a
man to hear what their favorite
employer had to say. Mr. Booth
did not enter into petty discussion
of personal affairs and measures of
minor importance as is the case
with the "politicians", but con
fined himself to the leading ques
tions of the day questions of vital
importance to every voter in this
country. Among the hutidred-and-one
good things that he said was
the remark that it was of little con
sequence whether or not he was
elected, but that the principles of
the party which had honored him
with a nomination should be up
held no matter what the cost. Mr.
Booth had no harsh word for his
opponent, aud did not put in his
time calling upon the audience to
support him whether they did any
one else or not. His speech was
purely on the great issues of the
countrv. and he handled ever)- sub
ject upon which he touched in a
masterly and scholarly manner.
In the audience were many ladies,
the majority of whom gathered
early, showing at once the interest
taken by the keepers of the homes
of this great country. If "crc 's
a man in Oregon today who is ap
preciated more than another by the
men who are in his employ that
man is R. A. Booth, and the
demonstration the Saginaw boys
gave him last night at the close of
his remarks was one that would
make any-man proud.
FOR COUNTY TREASURER.
L. Gilstrap is the republican
nomiuee for county treasurer. Mr.
Gilstrap is a veteran of the civil
war and as far as wc are informed
the only old soldier on cither ticket
He is a practical book keeper -aud
well qualified to fill the office. He
has raised a large family of boys,
four of whom are voters, and all
highly respected citizens. He is
book keeper for the Springfield
Lumber Co., which proves his
efficiency in this line. Should he
be elected he will not have to call
in assistance every few months to
straighten up the books. His sons
are publishers and proprietors of
the Register, but this should not be
held against him. Junction Times
Eugene Bond, republican candi
date for county school superin
tendent is one of the best known
educational men in the county. He
is a young man self made. He has
worked hard all his life educating
himself through the efforts of his
manual labor. He is a successful
school teacher, and is thoroughly
capable of filling the office. Vote
for him!
If you will stop "and think a
moment, and recall the condition-of
affairs your own included four
years ago, with the condition of
affairs your own included now
it will not take you long to decide
which way you will vote next June
and November. If you consult
your own and your country's good
you will vote a straight, republican
ticket.
Era Lee, who is out for re
election to the office of county
clerk at the hands of the republi
can party, needs no recommenda
tion at the hand of the press of this
state. A thorough office man, a
man of the best of habits aud al
ways at his post of duty. This is
his record and is sufficient to re
elect any man.
Attorney L. T. Harris, the re
publican nominee for reprtsenta
tive for Lane county, who has so
ably seconded Prosecuting Attor
ney Geo. M. Brown in his very
thorough work in this district for
the past two terms, will be elected
to the legislature by the largest
vote cast in the history of Lane
county.
There is only one nun in Line
county who has made as good an
assessor as the present incumbent
of that office and that's
