Anlninls Will lie I'urt of
Twelfth Census.
An enumeration of tho pnre-blood or
juire-brod farm nuImaU iu tho United
Stntes will bo n part of the twelfth con
sus. Tho main schedule for agriculture
provides for returning tho nnrnbor,
Juno 1, 1000, of nil puro-blooded ani
mals recorded or eligible to record, on
tho farm."
While tho treasury department, In
Administering tho tariff laws relative to
pure-bred animals, does not accept the
verbal statements of owners or agents,
but requires certified evidence In writ
ing of tho pedigreo claimed, the census
enumerator will bo compelled to rely
pretty generally, if not wholly, upon
verbal replies as to whether stock is
pure-bred.
As several months must elapse before
thu census of livo stock will be taken,
Director Morriam requests that nil who
nro not certain whether their unregis
tered animals ure grade, or pure-bred
nnd "eligible to record," tnko stops
definitely to scttlo the mooted tioint,
nnd thus bo prepared without hesitation
to give tho enumerator accurate infor
mation relative to this interesting
inquiry.
Sheep may be recorded by flocks;
but other animals aro recorded by indi
viduals. Tho herd books show that
nbout 750,000 cattle have been regis
tered in tho United States nnd it is
estimated thnt nbout 350,000 are liv
int.'. If breeders will rnako accurate
returns of their pure-bred animals to
the census enumerators next June, a
correct basis will bo secured for show
ing future expansion in high grade live
stock. Otherwise tho efforts of the
census officers will bo of small value.

terial taken from tho Washington for
ests. Bale of Sheep

on the 20th inst., to a Montana buyer,

ers at $2.50 for wethers and $2.75 for
ewes, to be delivered nftor shearing.
As the sheep will shear 10 pounds, and
Fitzgerald expects to get 18 cents a
pound for it, it will bo seen that he
figures on his yearlings bringing him
an average of $4.42 per head.
