part of the common stock of knowl
edge. It will usually run well up
I into the millions, but that only
tells a part of the story. There is
no insurance on the forests; and
even if there were, it would be
valueless with respect to the main
point of loss. We are being de
prived ol that which it takes years
perhaps a century to reproduce,
and in the meantime we are losing
the influences of that beneficent
pari which the torests take in
nature's beautiful economy. Here
is certainly an object lesson for the
new Cornell school of torestry.
Fires constitute one of the greatest
problems with which we have to
deal. It will not answer to say
that thev cannot be loreseen or
prevented. Germany permits no
SUCH wnoiesaic rum in uer spjcu
did forests, simply because she
employs an effective system of
watchfulness and protection. Even
under our more elastic form of
government, we ought to be able
to do in this respect what Germany
can do. Indeed, the time is fast
approaching when, whatever the
cost, we cannot afford not to.

Ed McKibben, day engineer at the Musick, is laying off and visited
pour city this week. Ed contracted a cold which settled upon his lungs.
Chas. Gettys is holding down Ed's job for him.
Bill Masterson of the Noonday is off duty for the present.
The Brooks-Scott party from Cravvfordsville, are said to have
struck it rich near the Ridge hotel.
Attorney A. H. Low of Drain was in the camp last week.
Bob Veatch the vigilant forest ranger is still on the trail. Bob
hasn't missed a day this season, and between him and the manager of
the heavenly water works, forest fires in his territory are alfired scarce.
The Noonday is now running 20 stamps.
The Musick saw mill is now in running condition and several thous
and feet of lumber has been turned out. It is said that considerable
building will be done at the mill this fall.
The continued heavy weather here in the mountains has a tendency
to check travel into the mines to quite an extent.
P. J. Jennings is reported to have visited the famous Helena this
week.
It is rumored that one of Cottage Grove's popular young men who
became stricken with the gold fever a week or two since, had quite an
experience in the vicinity of the Ridge hotel. The morning after his
arrival there, making his wants known be was packed up by some
sympathizing friends, and headed to the trail. He put out and in his
eager search for the "root of all evii," he lost his bearings and wandered
around like a mountain sheep for several hours. He fired his gun, and
then fired his gun s'more, trying to get a signal from camp, but nary a
a familiar sound. Finally a blast was shot, and then the young gold
hunter took a bee line for the sound. It seems he didn't stop for noth
ing nor nobody but just hit a few (only) of the high places. About
dark he reached camp worn out and dejected, and this was the begin
ning of the ending of his (gold) fever. The next morning he headed
for town- It is said he went over places in his efforts to get back to
camp that birds hardly dare fly over.
A rich strike is reported at the Riverside Gold Mining Camp,
which is far beyond their expectations. At this writing your corres
pondent is unable to learn the facts thereunto pertaining, but it is said
to be very rich.
