The funeral service was held nt tho Cumberland Presbyterian church in this city Satur day afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Wallace officiating. A large number of friends and accquaintancos was present among them being many silvered heads, who represented tho pioneer settlers of this section. Ho was laid to rest in the Masonic cemetery west of this city. Deceased was well known throughout Oregon, having figured conspicuously to his credit and the honor of Oregon in framing the laws and the early legisla tive work of the stato. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1832. He can e to O10 gon in 1849, and settled in Marion couuty. whero he was active and con spicuous in public afialrs and influential in the councils of the democratic party during hia entire residence there, for quarter of a century or more. He is a, lawyer by profession, but devoted most of his time to politics and farming, and in his time was regarded as one of the shrewde9t"poIiticians in Oregon. Ho was United States attorney bofore the organization of tho state Government, was three times a member of the ter ritorial legislature. In 1802 the legis lative assembly elected him to fill the unexpired term of Edward D. Baker, in tho United States senate. Baker hav ing been killed at the head of his regi ment in the battle at Ball's Bluff. Senator Harding served out the term and was succeeded, March 4, 1805, by George H. Williams. At the beginning of tho war of the re bellion James W. Nesmith, AenbelBush and Benjamin F. Harding were the rul ing spirits of the union or DouglaB de mocracy of Oregon, while General Joseph Lane, Delazon Smith and one or two others were the leaders of the Breckinson or pro-elivery democrats who sympathized with the secessionists of the South. They were bitterly hostile to each other. Nesmith was elected to a full term of six years and 1 aker to a term of four years in the United States penato by a combination between the DouglaB democrats and republicans', and Harding was elected in the same way to fill out Baker's term. Soon after tho close of his term in the senate, Mr. Harding retired to a farm in Marion county, and a few years later moved to farm near Cottago Grove. CIRCUIT COURT JURORS.
