Nov. 16
• An individual was
taken voluntarily to Uni-
versity District Peace
Health Hospital for a
mental evaluation. The
person was witnessed
and reported to be at-
tempting to break into
an apartment not be-
longing to him. This was
reported by a neighbor
who also lives at the in-
dividual’s
apartment
complex. Police had re-
sponded and contact-
ed the individual four
separate times over the
past five days on this
matter. The individu-
al in the past gas called
911 when he believes
that he hears gunshots
and a woman scream for
help, so he has repeat-
edly tried to unlawfully
enter an apartment. The
concerns were found to
be false. The individual
also sometimes believes
that the woman invites
him over, which she
does not. The individual
agreed with a respond-
ing officer that he needs
mental health treatment
and ultimately requested
that he receive it. He was
transported to the eval-
uation without incident.
• A vehicle accident
resulting in injury oc-
curred on the 900 block
of Row River Road.
• Shoplifting was re-
ported at Walmart and
officers were asked to
check the Row River
Trail for two suspects
who pushed away two
full carts of merchandise
without paying for it.

Nov. 18
• Theft of gas from a
motor vehicle was re-
ported on the 300 block
of S 5th Street.
• Officers respond-
ed to meet a business
owner, who herself re-
sponded to the location
on Gateway Boulevard
after a friend woke her
up to advise of a broken
glass door. Upon arriv-
al, the business was not
occupied and although
some things appeared
to be searched, nothing
appeared to be obviously
missing.
• Officers responded
to the 300 block on Hwy
99 regarding a burglary
alarm.
• Telephonic fraud
was reported from a
mini-mart on Main
Street when an employ-
ee received a call from
an unknown male ask-
ing the employee to de-
posit money into the
CoinCloud machine to
convert it to BitCoin
and transfer it to an un-
known account.
Nov. 20
• An individual called
Cottage Grove Police
and reported hearing
yelling in the area of
the 400 block of Fill-
more Avenue. The com-
plainant stated she went
outside and observed a
red bag with white plas-
tic hanging out of it. An
officer responded to the
area and observed the
bag sitting on the side-
walk but did not hear
any yelling or witness
anyone around it. The
officer opened the bag
and observed clothing
inside it. The bag was
seized and placed it into
a locker located at the
Cottage Grove Police
Department for safe-
keeping.
• A complainant re-
ported his vehicle was
tampered with on the
1600 block of Gateway
Boulevard.
Area resident dies from
head-on traffic crash in Eugene
The driver of a vehicle
involved in a crash in Eu-
gene on Tuesday, Nov. 16,
has died as a result of her
injuries.
Sarah Rose Johnson,
33, of Creswell was driv-
ing a 2008 GMC Yukon
southbound on Frank-
lin Blvd near Goshen on
Tuesday evening when
she was involved in a
head-on crash with an-
other vehicle.
The other vehicle, a
2014 Chevrolet Silverado
driven by Daniel Eugene
Jackson of Eugene, had
been traveling north-
bound on Franklin Blvd
just prior to the crash.
Jackson failed to nego-
tiate a slight curve and
drove into the oncoming
southbound lane, causing
the crash, stated a Lane
County Sheriff ’s Office
release.

Suzanne Rose Bottorff of
Cottage Grove, OR passed
away peacefully at home on
November 16, 2021, surround-
ed by loved ones aft er a long
fi ght with Ovarian Cancer.
She is survived by her husband
(Bob) of 48 years, her daughter
Pam Bottorff and her son Allen
(Angela) Bottorff , 8 grandchil-
dren (Brandon, Chelsey, Ce-
leste, Chad, Carter, Joe, Grace
and Sophie) and 1 great-grand-
son (Keagan), as well as broth-
er’s Mike (Tina) Miller, Jim
Miller, and sisters Mary Anne
King, Molly Fournier and Bob-
bie (Jeff ) Lloyd. She was pre-
ceded in death by two brothers
John and Joe Miller.
Sue was born in January of
1954 to Verl and Rose Miller
in Cottage Grove. She spent
her childhood there and met
and married her High School
sweetheart Bob in 1973. She
was a stay-at-home mother
and raised their 2 children
before working as a cafeteria
manager for the South Lane
School District. Aft er relocat-
ing to Klamath Falls, Bob and
Sue started a small logging
company that she managed for
over 20 years before eventually
returning to Cottage Grove to
be near family.
She loved her garden, grow-
ing fl owers, sewing, cooking,
and quilting. Th e joy of her
life was spending time with her
husband, kids, and grandkids.
A private family ceremony will
be held at a later date. Arrange-

Th eodore “Ted” Johnson, 67
of Cottage Grove passed away
October 18, 2021. Ted was
born in Portland, Oregon to
parents David and Elsie (Kal-
men) Johnson.
Aft er graduating from
Milwaukie High School, Ted
attended Portland State Uni-
versity. Ted was a wildland
fi refi ghter and worked for the
US Forest Service for over
30 years. He enjoyed hiking,
camping, cross country skiing,
being outdoors, the wilderness,
music, books, travel, art and
architecture, and spending
time with his family and dog.
He married Susan Fredericks
in 1989, and while remaining
friends, they divorced in 2009.
Ted is survived by his son
Erik Johnson of Cottage Grove;
his brother Martin Johnson of
San Anselmo, California; and
sister Dorothea Lee of Port-
land, Oregon. A memorial
service will be held at a later
date. Arrangements by Smith-

Jackson suffered minor
Jerry Vaverka passed away
on November 17, 2021. He was
born to December 30, 1942
to parents Jerry and Kathrin
(Hill) Vaverka in Marshall,
Oklahoma. He met his wife
of 50 years, Marjie Stalder in
Los Angeles, California while
working as a bank loan offi cer
and they married September 4,
1971. Jerry has been an active
member of the Cottage Grove
community since moving her
in 1979. He received the Cot-
tage Grove Chamber of Com-
merce Distinguished Service
Award in 2006. Jerry was an
avid supporter of all three of
his daughter’s sports, activi-
ties, especially Special Olym-
pics Oregon and served as the
track and basketball coach for
many years. He is well known
for supporting Community
Sharing Souper Fundraiser
with his famous seafood chow-
der, and volunteering with the
Bohemia Sunrisers, Kiwanis
and at Friday night bingo held
by the American Legion Post
32. He was very active at Our
Lady of Perpetual Help Cath-
olic Church in the Knights
of Columbus, the commu-
nity Christmas dinner, and
any event where his delicious
cooking was needed. Jerry was
regularly found in the kitch-
en at Our Lady of Perpetual
Help and was instrumental
rebuilding the parish center
aft er a fi re damaged it. Jerry
was huge football fan to the
Oregon Ducks and LA Rams.
He is survived by his wife Mar-
jie Vaverka of Cottage Grove,
OR; daughter Casey Vaverka of
Portland, OR; daughter April
Montoya Vaverka of Roswell,
GA; daughter Jill Vaverka of
Cottage Grove, OR; grandson
Maximiliano Montoya Vaverka
of Roswell, GA; grandson Ma-
teo Montoya Vaverka of Ros-
well, GA; sister Viktoria Vaver-
ka of Edmond, OK; brother
Frank Vaverka of Bison, OK;
brother Sam Vaverka of Tulsa,
OK; brother Patrick Vaverka
of Hennessy, OK; and brother

On Friday November 12,
2021, we lost a long time Cot-
tage Grove resident, Charles
“Wilbur” Heath at the age of 93.
Wilbur was born September 27,
1928 in Cottage Grove, Oregon
to parents J. Addison and Mable
(Wright) Heath. Wilbur lived
his entire life in Cottage Grove,
except for time studying Forest-
ry at Oregon State University
and serving in the United States
Army during the Korean Con-
fl ict. When he returned home
from the military he joined the
family business, Heath Logging
Company. In 1950 he married
his high school sweetheart
Catherine Getty and they cele-
brated 66 years together raising
their two sons. Wilbur oft en
joked that his long marriage was
due to Catherine’s willingness
for him to have a ”Mistress”. In
this case the “Mistress” was his
much loved 1948 Aeronca Se-
dan airplane that he rebuilt and
fl ew for many years until his last
fl ight on his 90th birthday at the
Cottage Grove airport.
Wilbur was involved in
many organizations. Locally he
was active in the Elks Lodge,
Oregon Aviation Historical So-
ciety, the Siuslaw Valley Bank,
PeaceHealth Cottage Grove
Medical Center and Our Lady
of Perpetual Help Catholic
Church. State-wide he served as
President of Associated Oregon
Loggers, Th e Pacifi c Logging
Congress and the 56th Annual
Oregon Logging Conference.
In 1985, he received the Ore-
gon Logger of the Year award.
Wilbur is also well known for
his picture in the January 1991
issue of Life Magazine. He ap-
peared with a spotted owl on his
shoulder as part of the story en-
titled Endangered Species - Owl
and Logger.
Wilbur is survived by his son
Charles “Craig” (Julie) Heath
of West Linn, OR; younger
brother Richard Heath; broth-
er-in-law Milt Levings and two
grandchildren Laura C. Heath
and James C. Heath.
Wilbur was preceded in
death by his wife Catherine
2017, his son Jeff ry Lynn Heath
2017, brother Addison Heath Jr.
and sister Cathy Levings. A cel-
ebration of life is planned aft er
the holidays in January 2022.
