Best bets for weekend fishing
Salmon fishing – coho and Chinook –
has been good in rivers along the coast,
in the Willamette Valley and in north-
east Oregon. Plan to hit the river as wa-
ter levels start dropping after a major
rain event.
Fall can be one of the best seasons of
the year for trout fishing.
Some waterbodies in the SW and
Willamette zones will be stocked with
trout for fall fishing.
Popular fisheries that were stocked
heavily in the spring and summer will
still have fish available to catch. With
cooler temperatures, these holdover fish
should be active and hungry as the try to
bulk up for the winter.
With recent rains, water levels in riv-
ers and streams are starting to return
to normal. Look for trout to be active
throughout the fall.
The catch-and-release chum fishery
is open in a handful of north coast riv-
ers. Chum is one of five Pacific salmon
species and an unusual catch for most
salmon anglers.
November means elk hunting
General Any Legal Weapon seasons
start Saturday with West Cascade Elk
and Rocky Mtn second season, followed
by Coast Elk seasons the next two Sat-
urdays—plus many controlled elk hunts
are happening. Don’t forget West Cas-
cade elk is now in November (Nov. 6-12
this year), rather than the middle of
Western Oregon deer season, a change
made to improve hunt quality. Remem-
ber to get your elk tag or redeem your
SportsPac voucher by visting myod-
fw.com/articles/how-buy-license-or-
tag#How-to-redeem-Sports-Pac-vouch-
er no later than the day before the hunt
begins.

youth this weekend
Youth hunters with their own unfilled
general Western Oregon Buck Deer Any
Legal Weapon tag or W High Cascade
(119A) tag may hunt this additional
weekend (not open to Mentored Youth
hunters).
Game bird harvest statistics at
ODFW wildlife areas
As upland bird and waterfowl hunt-
ing continue, hunters can use the har-
vest statistics from ODFW wildlife areas
to help plan their next hunting trip.
Take a duck hunting workshop
Duck hunting can be a great way to
begin your hunting career – it’s accessi-
ble and there’s lots of opportunity. Take
our two-day duck hunting workshop
at the Coquille Wildlife Area on Nov.
20-21 and you’ll get the know-how and
hands-on experience to go duck hunting

The fifth-seeded North Douglas Warriors
volleyball team capped off an historic sea-
son with a win over the second seed St. Paul
Buckaroos in the state title game Saturday
evening a Ridgeview High school, bringing
home the first state title in program history.
The Warriors defeated St. Paul in four sets
and end their season with an overall record
of 27-3.
“It was a lot of excitement,” said Head
Coach Emily Reed. “It was just like every-
thing that we had worked so hard for was
done. We have the best fans. And we had

History was made last Saturday when the Cottage Grove boys cross country team finished with their best place finish since 1975 tak-
ing home third. Heavy favorite Siuslaw would finish first with 42 points, Sisters would finish second with 88 points, while Cottage
Grove and Valley Catholic tied with 93 points. With the first five finishers for Cottage Grove and Valley Catholic tying points, the tie-
breaker went to the next finishers for each team. Brennen Murphy and Jace Meyer finishing ahead of the other two Valley Catholic
runners. Jayden Owens also finished in the top ten with a 17:09 and Carter Bengston ran the fastest time for freshman at the meet
with a 17:11. Other finishers include Ethan Peterson 17:35, Carter Parsons 18:29, Rafael Fields 18:51, Brennen Murphy 19:01, and
Jace Meyer 19:02.

Both elation and agony moved through
the Creswell volleyball team during the past
weekend. The Bulldogs fought their way
through two tough five-set matches against
Sutherlin and Catlin Gabel.
This week’s athlete of the
week is North Douglas
volleyball player Asia
Ward. Ward won player
of the game for North
Douglas in their 3-1
victory over St.Paul in
the state championship
game.
While neither result favored Creswell,
they were still able to take home a fourth-
place trophy and the Sportsmanship trophy

Sixth seed Cottage Grove trav-
eled to third seed Valley Catholic
last Tuesday Nov. 2 after the Li-
ons bounced Tillamook in the first
round of the playoffs. The Lions
were able to win the first set but
Valley Catholic went on to win the
next three sets as The Valiants won
in four sets over Cottage Grove
ending the Lions season.
The first set saw neither team
gain more than a five-point lead
until later in the set. Junior Blakely
Herbert served two aces in a row to
break a 17-17 tie giving the Lions a
19-17 lead.
Two more hits would go out for
Valley Catholic holding a lead for
Cottage Grove at 21-18. Gracie Ar-
nold would make it three points in
a row with a hit in forcing the op-
posing coach to call a timeout with
the Lions leading 22-18.
A Cottage Grove block at the net
and a hit from Taylor McKay would
end the first set in favor of the Li-
ons 25-20.
Valley Catholic would respond
in the second set going on a 10-3
scoring run to take a big 18-11 lead
over Cottage Grove and not look-
ing back.
