We’re looking at a co-year for coho
Coho salmon are “pouring” over Wil-
lamette Falls and are now well-distrib-
uted in the Clackamas (and the Sandy,
too) and arriving at the Stayton fish
counting station on the Santiam. On the
coast, the wild coho fishery is red hot in
Coos Bay right now.
Clatsop beaches open
for razor clams
Razor clamming opens on the popu-
lar and prolific Clatsop County beaches
this Friday, Oct. 1. Razor clam abun-
dance in this area is the highest seen
since 2004 when ODFW began assess-

A big weekend for bird hunters
Rooster pheasant, chukar and Hun-
garian partridge seasons open on Satur-

Cottage Grove’s cross country team trav-
eled to Philomath on Saturday to face off
against some of the top programs in the 4A
classification.
Defending state champion Siuslaw and
top contender Philomath were in atten-
dance as the boys varsity team took third
behind those two teams while the boys ju-
nior varsity team finished first.
“Our focus on Saturday was to see what
we could do against the teams in our
league,” said Head Coach Ricky Knutson.
“One of the best things about it was we still
have room to improve, the guys ran really
well. But we don’t feel like we’ve reached
our peak yet.”

Bulldogs beat Billies in five-set thriller

Creswell volleyball did not have the finish
they had hoped for when they hosted a tour-
nament against some top competition earlier
this month.
The Bulldogs won their pool earning the
top seed and were subsequently bounced in
the first round of the bracket against Suther-
lin.
Creswell had beaten top 15 ranked LaPine
early in the week and was looking for a second
straight victory against a top 15 opponent as
they traveled to Pleasant Hill.
The Billies took it to the Bulldogs in the
first two sets as they jumped out to a victory,
but Creswell would continue to battle as they
came back from that 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in
five sets.

Lions cruise past Falcons

This week’s athlete of the
week is Junior Yoncalla
football player Noah
Leary. Leary scored 4
total touchdowns in the
Eagles 52-0 win over
Gilchrist last week.

the Eagles
win against
Gilchrist.
Cottage Grove boys soccer (6-2-2)
played the last game of their three-
game road trip against Elmira (1-7-
1) last Wednesday.
In the Lions’ first game against
Elmira, Cottage Grove crushed the
Falcons to the tune of 8-0 and their
most recent game saw a similar tri-
umph.
The Lions downed Elmira in a 5-0
win and would continue their dom-
inance against Sky-Em league oppo-
nents and have yet to suffer a loss in
league play.
Junior Aldo Rea got the scoring
started for Cottage Grove 15 min-
utes into the first half as the Lions
jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. The
Lion attack kept the pressure on El-
mira’s defense all night long as 10
minutes later Rea added two more
goals just two minutes apart, grow-
ing the Cottage Grove lead to 3-0.
Jayden Cameron and Juan Gon-
zalez kept pressing as they had mul-
tiple shots on goal that were either
just outside the goal or barely over
the crossbar.
Goalkeeper Ty Kishen wasn’t test-
ed much in the first half, but man-
aged a couple of stops preventing
goals for the Falcons as the Lions
took their 3-0 lead into the locker
room at halftime.
Immediately in the second half,
Cameron and fellow senior Sylas
Williams continued the attack as
they both had multiple shots that
