The Tigers would not get closer as the Lions closed out the first set 25-17. Senters was a critical piece of Cottage Grove’s early 14-0 lead coming out of the break after the first set. Senters strung together 9 aces that paired nicely with big swings on the outside by her team- mates. Cottage Grove seemed to have Junction City on the ropes, but the Tigers would make a run of their own and claw back into the set. Junc- tion City’s Adessa Wood would serve four aces of her own cutting the Lions lead in half to 16-8. The Tigers continued to battle as they caught up to the Lions after scoring four more points in a row and tying the RIVALRY from B1 On the next Eagle of- fensive series quarterback Gabe Martinez was able to find Ashton Hardy, who made a great catch for a 26- yard gain moving the ball down to the North Doug- las 28-yard line. But again, the Warrior defense led by junior Ray Gerrad would not surrender a first quarter touchdown as they stopped Yoncalla again. With the Warriors of- fense coming back onto the field with only a few sec- onds left in the first quarter quarterback Wyatt Reed handed the ball off to Ray- on-Wilder who found an open lane and was off to the races scoring his third touchdown in the first quarter (20-0 ND). “Palu, I thought, did a great job of knowing where he could get his yards. I wondered how he would do against a bigger lineup, and he did well,” said North Douglas Coach JJ Mast. “I think he (Rayon-Wilder) probably played his best game tonight.” After forcing an Eagle turnover on downs North Douglas got the ball back and Gerrard ran for a gain of 32 down to the Yoncalla 27. But two plays later, Yon- calla forced another fum- ble, getting the ball back on their own side of the field. Martinez was able to find his big receiver Hardy twice on the drive for two gains of 20 and 23 yards. With 30 seconds left in the half Martinez looked to make another pass but was inter- cepted by Rayon-Wilder as the half came to a close and North Douglas still firmly in control (20-0 ND). Coming out of the lock- er room North Douglas would not miss a beat as Creswell Volleyball (9-5) Win vs. South Umpqua 2-0 Loss vs. Salem Academy 0-2 Creswell Girls Soccer (1-4-1) Loss vs. Lakeview 2-4 Creswell Boys Soccer (3-4) Win vs. La Pine 5-1 set at 20 points each. But Senters proved to be too much for the Junction City defense as she added three more aces accounting for four of the last five total points for Cottage Grove, closing out a hard fought second set with a 5-0 run ending in a Cottage Grove 2ns set victory. The third set followed sim- ilarly to the second set with Cottage Grove jumping out to a quick lead followed by Junction City inching their way back into it. The score was tied at 9-9, but after some huge serves by Peyton Kidd and Gracie Arnold, the Lions were able to push their lead back up to 17-13, forcing Junction City to use their last timeout of the set. Savannah Willits got involved in the serving hot streak as she added two aces of her own, making the lead 20-14 Lions. All signs pointed again to Cottage Grove running away with the set but Junction City continued to be tough as Ayden King would help cut the Lions lead to only two with some timely hits of Rayon-Wilder ran for a 50-yard score in their first offensive possession in the second half (27-0 ND). Yoncalla was able to get on the scoreboard later in the quarter as Noah Leary ran the ball three times on the Eagles drive for a total of 52 yards and a score (27-6 ND). North Douglas and Yon- calla traded defensive stops as the Warriors got the ball back with under a minute left in the third quarter and Rayon-Wilder ran in an- other score from 47 yards putting a stranglehold on the game (34-6 ND). Rayon-Wilder found the endzone one more time in the fourth quarter increas- ing the Warrior lead (41-6 ND). Yoncalla was able to add another score as they were set up well from a Leary kickoff return deep into her own. Cottage Grove would cap- italize on 3 detrimental mis- takes, closing on the set at 25-21 and earning the match victory. “After the game we talk- ed about how it takes a lot of focus and energy to keep yourself positive when you’re making mistakes. And I wouldn’t say that we made it through that game without making any mis- takes. I mean we had our fair share,” said Coach Ladd. “But I think the difference was our response to our mistakes led us to be able to stay on top of the game and keep the momentum where- as the other team wasn’t able to do that in the same way that we did.” Later in the week Cottage Grove cruised past Marist in another 3-0 victory, helping the Lions crack the top five rankings and sitting atop the Sky-Em league stand- ings. The Lions will contin- ue their road trip as they travel next to Marshfield Oct. 7, Seaside Oct. 9, and Elmira Oct. 12. North Douglas territory allowing Hardy to cash in a touchdown (41-13 ND). North Douglas’ Wyatt Reed had the last score of the evening as he ran in a 47-yard score (47-13 ND). “It’s bittersweet you want to win the rivalry game, but we got to know those coaches we are five miles away,” said North Douglas coach Mast. “Then coach- ing with them last year you build a little bit more of a bond. We know a lot of their kids too and you just want them to feel good at the same time too.” North Douglas has now won four in a row as they find themselves near the top of the league standings. They travel to Riddle today (Oct. 7). Yoncalla will also hit the road today as they have a good opportunity to get a win against Gilchrest. Did You Know? North Lake would muster one more score against Elk- ton as another run by the Cowboys’ Herinckx made it 33-13. In the final minutes of the quarter, Rausch ran for another score, growing the lead for Elkton (39-13). Rausch and Halstead added two more scores for Elkton as they ended the night with a big win over North Lake 53-13. “I’m really happy with our defense the last couple weeks,” said Coach Lock- hart. “I still think our team can be much better.” Elkton will travel next week to Prospect Charter on Oct. 8 as they try to earn their third victory in a row.
