The best season for crabbing is right
now
Fall is typically the best time of year
to crab. Beginning in September, crabs
will have filled out with more meat, and
you’ll find more crabs in bays and estu-
aries thanks to drier weather. Pick up
some pointers about how to crab myod-

Sturgeon retention on the Colum-
bia
Four additional sturgeon retention
days were added in the mainstem Co-
lumbia from the Wauna Powerlines up-
stream to Bonneville Dam, including the
Cowlitz River. Anglers can now retain
white sturgeon in this area on Saturday,
Sept. 18, Sunday Sept. 19, Wednesday
Sept. 22, Saturday Sept. 25, and Wednes-
day Sept. 29. Find more details by vis-
iting myodfw.com/recreation-report/

Clock is ticking for small stream
anglers
Trout fishing on many small streams
along the coast closes at the end of Oc-
tober. That’s just six more weeks to
enjoy fishing for resident and sea-run
cutthroat trout before the season ends.
Limited wild coho seasons open Sept.
15
Wild coho retention seasons will
open Sept. 15 in the Tillamook, Nestuc-
ca, Siletz and Coos basins. See the regu-
lation update sections at the top of the
NW and SW zones.
Go high lakes fishing before the
snow flies
Fall can be an excellent time to fish
the high mountain lakes. Fish are trying
to bulk up for the winter, the weather can
be beautiful and the mosquitoes are dy-
ing down. The fishing can be good until
snow starts to limit access. Learn more
about fishing the high lakes at myodfw.

Be ready for your hunt
A lot of planning goes into a success-
ful hunt. Make sure you’ve checked all
the boxes with the hunter’s checklist:
BUY YOUR TAG, if you haven’t already.
Check the weather forecast. Chance
of rain? Snow? Record high tempera-
tures? Also make sure you’re prepared
for unexpected conditions (rain, snow).
Check the batteries in your GPS,
flashlights, headlamps, two-way radios,
etc. And make sure you have spares.
Sharpen your knives. A dull knife just
encourages swearing. And you’re more
likely to cut yourself with a dull knife.
More swearing.
Begin assembling your pack items use
the checklist below as a guide.
Make last minute trip(s) to the sport-
ing goods store. Seems like no matter
how much gear you have, you need at
least one more thing.
Let someone know where you’re go-
ing, where you’ll camp, what route you’ll
take there and back, how long you’ll be
gone, when you’ll be back, and if and
when you’ll be able to check in (ex. will
you be in cell phone range). This way if
an emergency comes up at home, OSP
will need to know how to find you.

The Bulldogs saw their first
game in two weeks after a
COVID-19 breakout at Co-
quille High School forced the
Red Devils to cancel all athletic
activities.
Creswell hosted the winless
Central Linn Cobras this past
Friday to see a second Bulldog
victory this season.
The Cobras in their first two
games had given up an aver-
age of over 33 points per game
while Creswell scored 40 in
their first game against Harris-
burg.
Creswell’s quarterback Con-
nor Hanson and receiver Jack
Nguyen got the offense going
for the Bulldogs as Hanson
connected with Nguyen for 24
yards and Nguyen finished the
drive with a 10-yard run to the
outside for the score. Giving
Creswell an early 7-0 lead in
the first quarter. Central Linn
had their turn to show off their
triple-option scheme when
they possessed the ball.
The Cobras were able to rush
for some first-downs to open
their series but were quickly
faced with a 3rd and 13 forcing
them to pass.
The Bulldogs managed to
get past the offensive line en
route to sacking the Cobra

Samantha MacDowell goes for the point in the Warriors’ win
against Days Creek
A battle of top 10 teams took
place over the past week be-
tween fourth-ranked North
Douglas and seventh-ranked
Days Creek. In the past five
matchups with the Wolves from
Days Creek, North Douglas
has a 1-4 record. A few games
into the season North Douglas
had to pause volleyball activity
because of COVID-19 contact
tracing but the Warriors are
looking sharp early on this sea-

The first set started out tight
with a 6-4 lead for Days Creek
but after serving the ball out of
bounds North Douglas would
capitalize and rolled right into a
strong scoring streak.
The Warriors captured the
lead at 7-6 in the first set after
a big hit from Halli Vaughn
followed by well-placed serves
from Asia Ward to push the
lead to 9-6. North Douglas con-
