6A | SEPTEMBER 9, 2021 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Arts & Culture Opal Center to host Design Arts Apprenticeship Program for teens Lane Arts Council’s popular out-of-school program pairs students with design professionals for a unique arts learning experience Lane Arts Council’s De- sign Arts Apprenticeship Program is back this fall to offer college and career readiness skills for Lane County middle and high school students. In addition to several sites in the Eugene-Spring- field area, Lane Arts Coun- cil is also offering this pro- gram at the Opal Center in Cottage Grove. Local mentors Heather Green and Olive del Sol are contributing their talents to the program in Opal Center. Greene specializes in biomimicry (designs mod- eled on biological entities and processes) while del Sol focuses on graphic de- sign. “Hosting the Lane Arts Council’s Apprenticeship Program at The Opal Cen- ter for Arts and Education adds to our diverse pro- gramming and creates op- portunities for students to expand their knowledge and skills in a small group setting,” said Executive Di- rector Michele Rose. “The more diverse, the better.” Opal Center is looking for more mentors as well. Mentors can apply through the Lane Arts Council. Following the end of the 10-week program, Rose will showcase the pro- gram’s projects in Opal Center’s windows. Providing conditions al- low for it, there may be an open house as well, said Rose. Lane Arts Council is a nonprofit organization that works to cultivate creative arts communities through- out Lane County. A virtual version of the council’s program will also be available for students in rural communities to easily participate in this hands-on, professional skill-building opportunity. In-person sessions will follow OHA guidelines for safety including required masks and thorough sani- tization, but students may also choose to apply for a fully virtual experience. The Design Arts Ap- prenticeship Program pairs three to four students with one professional men- tor to delve into the design process. Students will participate in hands-on projects, de- velop a clear understand- ing of the professional and business side of a career in design, and learn skills that will bolster college and ca- reer readiness. Students will engage in 25 apprenticeship hours over a 10-week period in subjects such as graphic design, fashion design, fur- niture design, architecture, and product design. In the program’s most recent term, one group focused on designing sus- tainable housing solutions for unhoused members of the community. Apprentices sketched ideas and made bal- sa-wood models individ- ually, then decided as a group which elements they wanted to bring forward into the final design.
