U.S. Air Force Band
cancels concert
Due to the increase in
COVID-19 variant cases,
the Aug. 25 concert of the
U.S. Air Force Band of the
Golden West in Cottage
Grove has been canceled.
The Department of De-
fense has established mask
requirements for indoors
and other restrictions to
help prevent cases among
the troops.
The U.S. Air Force has
canceled or postponed all
California and Oregon
performances of the USAF
Band of the Golden West.
It is hoped the third
scheduling will be success-
ful as continuing contact
with the USAF Band of the
Golden West officials will
secure a concert resched-
uled in the community.
Oakridge evacuation notices
downgraded to Level 1
On Aug. 16, the Level 2
“Be Set” evacuation notice
for the Oakridge area was
downgraded to the Level 1
“Be Ready” status regard-
ing the Kwis Fire.
The fire is roughly two
miles east of Oakridge and
is part of the larger Mid-
dle Fork Complex of fires
being fought in the area.
The following areas are
being reduced to a Level
1 “Be Ready” evacuation
notice: High Prairie, Fish
Hatchery, Oakridge north
of Roberts Road, and
Oakridge east of Salmon
Creek.
This means that the
Oakridge / Westfir com-
munity is all at a Level 1
evacuation level.
An evacuation map is
available at www.Lane-
CountyOR.gov/Middle-
ForkComplex.
Level 1 means you
should continue to be
aware of the danger that
exists in your area, mon-
itor local media outlets
and telephone devices to
receive further informa-
tion.
Residents should also
continue to prepare for
the precautionary move-
ment of persons with spe-
cial needs, mobile prop-
erty, pets and livestock
should conditions worsen.
If conditions worsen,
public safety personnel
will make contact again
using the emergency noti-
fication system.
More information is
available at www.Lane-
CountyOR.gov/Middle-
ForkComplex.
More information about
evacuation levels and what
they mean can also be
found at www.LaneCoun-
tyOR.gov/evacuation.

1930-2021
Bernie Martin passed away
peacefully on July 31, 2021, at
Blue Haven Memory Care in
Independence Oregon, sur-
rounded by family. She was 90
years old.
Bernie was born September
22, 1930, to parents Charles
and Lizzie Harper in Stonewall,
Mississippi. In 1952 she moved
to Bandon, Oregon and then to
Cottage Grove in 1953 where
she resided until 2017 when
she relocated to Independence
Oregon to be closer to family.
She worked for many years
in the Cottage Grove High
School cafeteria and helped by
selling tickets at the high school
basketball games and wrestling
matches until her retirement
in 1998. She truly enjoyed her
job and especially loved the
students. She was always hap-
py to make a special salad for a
staff member or sneak an extra
cheese roll or french fries to the
kids. Bernie was a wonderful
baker and cook and was always
preparing pies or cookies for
family and friends. She enjoyed
spending time with her family,
reading, walking, sewing, and
having coff ee with friends.
Bernie is survived by her son
Dan Martin of Cottage Grove,
daughter Carolyn White and
son-in-law Rick of Carlton,
daughter Staci Steele and son-
in-law John of Dallas, Oregon,
and numerous grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by her
son Dennis and daughter Fay.
Bernie was a wonderful
mother, grandmother, and
friend. She will truly be missed
by everyone who knew and
loved her.
