and off ered a proposition
to open a natural food
and vitamin supplement
store, much like those
they worked at on the East
Coast.
Over the years aft er col-
lege, they stayed in touch
writing each other Christ-
mas cards. When the
“Dandy Lion” ended its
run, an idea struck.
Bachtler recalled, “I
called Marta when I
learned the business was
for sale and she respond-
ed by telling me that her
husband Gordon was in
Eugene looking for work.”
As fate would have it,
Gordon Beaman, a baker
and musician, also worked
at a health food store in
Maryland and had already
decided to set his sights on
Oregon.
Days passed, several
phone calls later and mu-
tual agreements made, the
four entrepreneurs were
closer to living out their
fantasy of opening their
very own store.
With an enormous
amount of trust, Cush-
man’s seed money and a
plan in hand, Boyett trav-
eled over 2,800 miles by
car to join the others and
fi nally see their dream
come true.
Aft er some inventory
updates and redecorating
to the old “Dandy Lion,”
Sunshine General Store
opened its doors on June
14, 1976.
Th e store’s fi rst adver-
tisements boasted bulk
goods, dairy products, vi-
tamins, teas, spices, and
local honey. Plans for the

at the Eunice Akin House
on Ash & M St. Th ey
worked very hard to keep
the store open and fi nd
their footing, oft en sacri-
fi cing their own free time
and living off of peanut
butter and tortillas to keep
their dream alive.
Bachtler left the busi-
ness in 1978, while Bea-
man and Boyett stayed on
board until an amicable
marital separation 1983
led to Boyett leaving Bea-
man to run Sunshine Gen-
eral Store in 1990.
Charles “Chuck” Mc-
Leod worked off and on
at Sunshine General Store
for nine years until he and
his wife, Debbie Lavois
purchased Old Mill Farm
Store. He remembers Bea-
man’s work ethic very well.
“He was a wonderful
guy … very smart and
helped many Cottage
Grove residents with ho-
meopathic medicine and
natural foods,” Lavois re-
lated. “Before Sunshine
General Store, people had
to travel to Eugene to fi nd
homeopathic products.”
Once established, the
store was a go-to for hun-
dreds and thousands of
people in Cottage Grove
seeking
locally-sourced
farm foods and alterna-
tive treatments for health
issues.
As places like Trader
Joe’s and Whole Foods
emerged in big cities, Sun-
shine General Store con-
tinued to provide Grover’s
with fresh, local produce,
artisanal baked goods,
plant based and interna-
tional foods, homeopathic

mat” markets today.
Gordon Beaman contin-
ued the store’s operations
for years until his own
personal health issues be-
gan to take a toll in recent
years. Th en, as the recent
coronavirus pandemic ac-
celerated, the store’s inven-
tory went into decline.
Rumors of the stores
closing began to circulate
in May while loyal custom-
ers continued to shop, and
longtime employee Carol
Palmer Williams handled
the fi nal transactions.
Beaman was hospital-
ized by mid-July and sad-
ly, passed away on July 20,
2021, with his brother and
sister at his side.
An announcement of
his passing and planned
remembrance was fi nal-
ly posted to Facebook on
July 29 by Williams and
a wave of comments and
heartfelt reactions ensued.
Most remember Bea-
man and Sunshine Gener-
al store as a vital resource
for the Cottage Grove
community, and both will
be dearly missed.
Th e remembrance was
held at a local residence
in Cottage Grove. Approx-
imately 40 friends and
family members attended
the service.
In lieu of a eulogy, at-
tendants contributed their
own personal stories and
anecdotal testimonies to
celebrate Beaman. Th e
service was concluded
with a small ceremony by
those that stayed until the
end.
Marta Boyett recalls, “it
was really a sendoff for
Gordon, as he heads to
greener pastures.”
