COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | JULY 29, 2021 | 9A CGHS student takes second place in statewide Mayors Contest SALEM, Ore. – Kourt- ney Owens, a 12th grader at Cottage Grove High School won the second-place prize for her digital presentation in the Oregon Mayors As- sociation’s (OMA) “If I Were Mayor...” civic aware- ness contest. Each year, students statewide compete in three age groups using diff erent media, describing what it would mean if they were the mayor of their city. Posters are designed by 4th and 5th grade students, 6th through 8th grade stu- dents write essays, and 9th through 12th grade stu- dents produce a short vid- eo or other digital media presentation. Th e competition begins with a local contest con- ducted by mayors. Th e lo- cal fi rst-place winners are entered in the state-level competition in the spring, which is judged by mem- bers of the OMA Judging Committee. Fift een cities participated in this year’s contest at the local level, with 26 entries being for- warded to the state-level competition. As a second-place win- ner, Kourtney will receive a check for $300.00. Th e next three-week round of tours for the next group will include councilors Greg Ervin, Kenneth Michael Roberts and Jon Stinnett, beginning Aug. 12. Th e inclusion of the Cot- tage Grove City Council in the tours was a purposeful addition. “Th ere’s no point in doing a bunch of tours to educate the citizenry about these things and not include our city councilors, who are the ones who are most direct- ly making decisions about them,” said Boone. “Every- body who comes on the city council gets a tour of those locations, but it’s not as in- depth.” Th e potential for future tours covering other as- pects of city remain, but no plans have yet been made.
