County Fire and Rescue
set the fire danger level at
‘high.’
High fire danger level

10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. It
also places restrictions on
smoking, open fires, pow-

ized vehicles, bans use of
all illegal fireworks, and re-
stricts where the use of legal
fireworks can be used.

LCSO requests public help
in missing person case
The Lane County Sher-
iff ’s Office is asking for the
public’s help in locating
missing 36-year-old Todd
Ian Chappell.
Chappell was last seen
in the area of Carpenter’s
Bypass Rd. milepost 5 near
Lorane, Oregon on July 17,
2021, at about 3 or 4 a.m.
After running out of gas,
Chappell is believed to have
left on foot in an unknown
direction wearing a pas-
tel-colored tie dye shirt and
blue jeans.
He is described as a white
male adult with brown
hair and brown eyes. He
stands approximately 5’11”
and weighs approximately
190lbs.
Chappell has tattoos on
his face and neck including
a tattoo of a question mark
on his right cheek. Chappell
may currently have stubble,
but he is not believed to
have a full beard as depict-
ed in the accompanying
photo.
Anyone with informa-
tion regarding Chappell’s
whereabouts are asked to
contact the Lane County
Sheriff ’s Office at 541-682-
4150 opt. 1.

ning staff began inspecting
properties within the city
limits for compliance with
Cottage Grove Municipal
Code 8.12.045 Hazardous
Vegetation.
Code requires city prop-
erty owners to cut and or
remove wild blackberry
bushes, weeds and grass
over 12 inches in height,
and vegetation near com-
bustibles or likely to en-
danger buildings or other
property.
Staff has inspected ap-
proximately two thirds of
the city to date with plans
to have the remaining
properties inspected by the
end of next week.

vegetation in violation of
the code have been sent

If the property is still in vi-
olation, the city will send
a second letter to comply
and post the letter on the

The owner will be sub-
ject to fines and a possi-
ble lien on the property
provided the violation for
vegetation removal has not
been addressed following
the second letter.
On July 19 at approximately 5:25 p.m., the Lane Coun-
ty Sheriff ’s Office reported that deputies and emergency
medical personnel responded to Lakeside Park on the Cot-
tage Grove Reservoir regarding an accident on the water.
Deputies learned that 58-year-old Albert Johnson of
Creswell was jet skiing when he possibly suffered an emer-
gency medical issue.
After parking and departing the jet ski, Johnson com-
plained that he could not breathe then suddenly fell un-
derwater.
Johnson was pulled to the shore and given life-saving
measures including CPR. Medics were unable to revive
him and he was pronounced deceased.
This case remains under investigation and updates will
be provided as they become available.

Darlene Marie (Carpenter)
Burback, 77, of Cottage Grove
passed away July 16, 2021.
Darlene was born March 9,
1944 in Astoria, OR to parents
Wilburn and Virginia (Leahy)
Carpenter. She graduated from
South Eugene High School in
1962, then married Garland
Burback February 10, 1963 in
Eugene, OR. She was owner
of the Cottage Grove Garbage
Service. Darlene was very
faithful to the Cottage Grove
United Methodist Church,
doing outreach programs and
community service. She en-
joyed making jewelry, beading,
painting, gardening, walking,
going to the beach, day trips to
the casino, and having lunch
and shopping with her girls.
Her greatest joy was being a
wife, mom, and grandma. Dar-
lene is survived by her husband
of 58 years, Garland; daugh-
ter Kimberly and (Darren)
Glenn of Cottage Grove, OR;
daughter Lisa (Tim) Alverson
of Eugene, OR; siblings Rae
Westcott, Carol Stock, Bill Car-
penter; 8 grandchildren and 6
Great-grandchildren. A pri-
vate graveside service will be
held at Rest Haven Memorial
Park. Memorial donations can
