2A | JUNE 17, 2021 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL On The Record Sheriff ’s office seeks information in hit-and-run The Lane County Sher- iff ’s Office (LCSO) along with the assistance of the Oregon State Police and Cottage Grove Police De- partment are investigating a hit and run crash that occurred near the intersec- tion of Hillside Drive and Howard Loop just outside of Cottage Grove. On June 12 at approxi- mately 5:45 p.m., a pedes- trian was struck by a vehicle which fled the scene. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital with se- rious injuries. LCSO is looking to speak with the driver of a dark green Ford pickup that was in the area of a crash. The driver is described as an ‘older’ white male adult standing approximately 6’02” and weighing approx- imately 250 pounds. He is further described as having gray hair and a gray beard. The truck possibly has fresh damage to the front including a broken or cracked bug shield. Any- one with information is asked to contact the Lane County Sheriff ’s Office at 541-682-4150 opt 1. The case number is 21-3285. This investigation is de- veloping and updates will be provided when available. Magnolia Gardens hosts dementia support group Magnolia Gardens is hosting a de- mentia support group for caregivers, spouses and those affected by Alzhei- mer’s or other forms of dementia. This group will be meeting in person at the First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove every third Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Some of the key benefits of attend- ing a support group include: ongoing education about Alzheimer’s and other dementia, learning about community resources, improving coping skills and gaining a sense of control over individ- ual situations. Having the opportunity to share with others who may be going through a similar situation is very important. Smith 1949-2021 Lillian Arnold 1920-2021 Lillian Arnold Dorena, passed away May 18, 2021 at the age of 100. Lillian was born May 22, 1920 in Philadelphia, OA to Walter and Emma (Kuintzle) Hoff man. Aft er graduating high school Lillian married Kermit Arnold in Virginia on august 6, 1940. Lillian was a housewife and was a published Master Quilter and was a member of the Balti- more Quilt Society and Studio 12 Quilts. Lillian is survived by her daughters Karen Dirks (Ste- phen) of Dorena, OR; Kim Baird (Ron) of Battleground, WA; Kathleen Headley of Van- couver, WA; son Keith Arnold; 11 grandchildren and 15 great- great grandchildren. Judy was born on august 1, 1941 and raised in Eugene. She loved her two boys Dane and Mathew, fl owers and her home. She will be irreplaceable as a partner and always will be. CGPD seek information on theft suspect Barbara L. Smith, 71, of Cottage Grove, Oregon passed away June 1, 2021. Barbara was born June 28, 1949, in Phoenix, Arizona to parents Earnest Richardson and Lea Belle McCourt. After graduat- ing from Aquafria High School in Avondale, Arizona in 1966, she married Edward R. Smith June 14, 1968, in Phoenix, Arizona. Barbara worked at the Phoenix Good Samaritan Hos- pital in the dietary department, and then worked as an optician in Paradise Valley. She enjoyed reading, history, gardening, bicycling, and spending time with her family. Barbara was very patriotic and love her country. She is survived by her husband of 54 years Edward, daughter Julie Smith and her dog Jazimoto, all of Cottage Grove, Oregon. She is pre- ceded in death by her parents; daughter Christine Leann; son Brian Edwards; sisters Peggy Moore and Pricilla Madden. Services will be held at a later date. Jean was born October 17. 1948 in Pocatello, Idaho to parents Ernest and June (Stevens) Giraud. Jean graduated high school in 1967 and received his associates degree from Lane Community College September 1992 in computer programming. He joined the Navy December 1st,1970 as a sonar technician. Jean received the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and good conduct. Jean married Mavis Ione Couser January 16,1976 in Las Vegas. He worked as a millworker for Bohemia Lumber Company for 18 years, and then for Peirce Irrigation and Fittings as a fabricator where he retired in 2013. Jean enjoyed woodworking, remodeling, painting, gardening, landscape design, rock hounding, gold panning, mushroom picking, and hunting. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to France, Hawaii, Alaska, and all the Utah state parks. Jean was an avid reader and golfer. He loved the theatre and acted in 3 plays at the Cottage Grove Theatre. He was a long-time councilman at the Cottage Grove Faith Center. His greatest passion was helping others. He and his wife were volunteers with the local help line in Cottage Grove. Jean and a friend made a telescope, and the family will be getting together soon to watch the stars. Jean is survived by his wife of 45 years Mavis Giraud; daughter Tracy (John) Silva of Cottage Grove, OR; son Clay Thornburgh of Las Vegas, NV; sister Tillie (Brad) Stewart of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren Brandon, Chelsy, Brittany, and Cameron; great-grandchildren Malaki, Josiah, Easton, and Naomi; nephew Dustin and niece Erin.
