South Lane County Fire and Rescue (SLCFR) recently put into service a new
addition to its five-vehicle ambulance fleet. “I’m really excited about it,” said
Division Chief Joe Raade. “So far, it’s been a great purchase.” Previous to this
new vehicle, the fleet had operated on van chassis, which provide a much
smoother (and less painful) ride for patients. The newest addition rests on a
truck chassis, though is equipped with liquid springs, making the ride just as
soft as a van. Along with more optimized spatial configuration, the vehicle
boasts a long-lasting “MiFi” cradlepoint, which will be a standard purchase
moving forward. Ambulances have a lifespan of between nine and 12 years.
“We’re hoping to order another one in the next budget year,” said Raade.
EPD warns of
fake opioids
The Eugene Police De-
partment (EPD) has seen
a significant increase in
overdose deaths attributed
to fentanyl.
Most commonly, these
deaths have been linked
to fake prescription drugs
that are actually fentanyl.
Fentanyl is around
100 times stronger than
morphine and around 50
times stronger than hero-
in. Very small amounts of
this drug can kill.
The fake prescription
drugs are usually not white
in appearance, whereas
the actual prescriptions
are white (although occa-
sionally a very light blue).
EPD reports it is com-
monly seeing bright blue
in Eugene. The letter “M”
is imprinted on one side
and the number “30” on
the other are stamped to
make the pill appear to
be oxycodone hydrochlo-

to be placed in on-street
parking spaces along city
streets and should be piled
so they don’t block bike
or traffic lanes and are no
closer than 30 feet from an
intersection.

1916-2021
Vida L. Brickner, 104, of
Coos Bay, OR passed on May
9, 2021 from Covid-19. She
was born on July 22, 1916 in
Los Angeles, CA to parents

Alan Lee Ballance
1951-2021
Homer resident, Mr. Alan
Lee Ballance, 70, died at his
home Th ursday, May 5th, 2021
with his family by his side from
congestive heart failure.

Alan was born April 25,
1951 in Pasadena, California.
He served on many Navy ships
and boats, performing numer-
ous metal worthy duties, and
received a Certifi cate of Rec-

fi eld for his Cold War Services.
Alan acquired an assortment
of degrees and certifi cations in
electronics and communica-
tions, until he retired himself

Owners Associations in Cot-
tage Grove, Oregon, for about
10 years ending in 1996. He
fulfi lled a lifelong dream when
he fi nally was able to move to
Alaska in 2016.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, Th axton and
Virginia Ballance and brother,
Steve.
His ashes will be spread at
Sea by the Navy and he will
have a memorial marker in a
National Cemetery.
Memorial donations may
be made in memory of Alan to
any trustworthy organization
assisting homeless, wounded
Veterans and Servicemen and
Servicewomen.

She married Eugene P. Brick-
ner and they were married for
32 years. Vida is survived by
her daughter, Rosalie Treff ry,
Sprague River, OR; 6 grand-
children, 14 great-grandchil-
dren and 2 great-great grand-
children. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Eugene
Brickner in 1992 and Christian
Engholm. A Graveside service
was held on Th ursday, May 13,
2021 at 4:00 PM at Fir Grove

L. Wayne Workman (87)
passed away peacefully Mon-
day, April 26th, 2021 at his
home in Lindon, Utah with
family by his side. We celebrate
his reunion with our mother,
Rita, who passed away almost
one year ago.
Wayne was born November
14th, 1933 in Cardston, Alber-
ta, Canada to Th omas L. and
Mary E. Workman. He was
the youngest of 10 children.
In 1937 they left Canada and
settled in Woodburn Oregon.
Here Wayne met his sweet-
heart Rita Sabin at 14 yrs. Af-
ter serving in the Navy during
the Korean War, they married
in 1955 and enjoyed their 65
years together.
Wayne went to school in
Automotive Technician in Eu-
gene, Oregon. Th ey settled in
Cottage Grove where Wayne
worked as service manager
at the Ford Garage for 13 yrs.
In 1971 he became an Auto-
motive Technology Instructor
at Lane Community College
in Eugene. Wayne and Rita
owned and operated an Adult
Foster Home for Veterans and
built a rental business with
friends, LeRit Investments.
Wayne had a passion for help-
ing people live a better life. He
found many opportunities to
do this as a husband, father,
mentor, employer and friend.
He actively served in many re-
sponsibilities as a member of
the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints.
Th e family lived in Cottage
Grove for nearly 50 years, in
Albany, OR for 11 years and
then moved to Utah in 2015.
Wayne was preceded in
death by his wife, Rita Lor-
raine, his youngest son, Mitch-
ell Kent and his 9 Siblings and
their spouses. He is survived
by 4 of his children, Mary El-
len (Blair) Kent, Deedra Lynn
(David) Hansen, Th omas Dean
(Penny) Workman and Jerry
Dale (Caroline) Workman. He
is loved and remembered fond-
ly by 20 grandchildren and 8
great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be-
gin at 10:00am Saturday, May
15th in Th e Church Of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints in
