6A | MAY 6, 2021 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL BMD seeks Town Logo Design submissions Transforming the Slabtown vs Lemati Feud into a year-round compe- tition requires blending the past with the present — and recreate the 19th Century feuding towns of Cottage Grove (Slabtown) and Lemati. Any new town needs a logo. The Bohemia Min- ing Days Board will invite two graphic designers to select four logo designs that meet the criteria be- low, which settlers of the two towns will vote on. The logo with the highest votes becomes that town’s official logo. It will be used on mer- chandizing to raise mon- ey to produce the annual BMD celebration and will be used in the festival’s promotional materials. Five rules of logo design • Your logo should reflect your town in a unique and honest way. • Avoid too much de- tail. • Your color logo should work well in black and white (one-color print- ing). • Make sure your town’s logos scalable. • Your logo should be artistically balanced. 7 basic rules for logo design A logo must: commu- nicate, be relevant, be memorable, be timeless, should not have superflu- ous elements, should be technically well crafted and must be versatile. 8 steps to design a sim- ple logo • Understand why you need a logo. • Define your brand identity. • Find inspiration for your design. • Check out the compe- tition. • Choose your design style. • Find the right type of logo. • Pay attention to color. • Pick the right typog- raphy. BMD is struggling fi- nancially at this time and seeks artists who will provide logo designs pro-bono as a gift to fu- ture generations who will proudly use it. The 61st Annual Bohemia Mining Days Celebration was one of many casualties of the COVID-19 global pan- demic in 2020. The potential of having to cancel this year’s festi- val to protect the health and safety of Grovers and our guests means the BMD Board of Directors needs to creatively seek new revenue sources to ensure the future of Cot- tage Grove’s biggest event of the year. The submitted designs that follow the guidelines below will be publicized with the graphic artist’s name as part of the voting process.
