They are built to be an ef- ficient, safe and affordable option for temporary cot- tage-style housing. Taking only about 30 minutes to set up, the insulated shelters can be snapped together on site. The new site comes complete with sanitizing stations, portable bath- rooms and there are plans to include a mobile shower/ restroom trailer, also man- aged by Community Shar- ing, at the site in the future. People using the shelters will have to adhere to rules including the prohibition of drug use and refraining from cooking or smoking indoors. No food prep will take place at the site, so pre- pared food will be brought in when needed. Keeping with Beds for Freezing Nights’ activation threshold, the Community Sharing Warming Shelter will open when nights dip to 29 degrees Fahrenheit or below and will be open from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following day. The community will be alerted 48 hours in advance of activations. Dinner from A1 weeks every Sunday, Christmas Eve saw somewhere be- tween 150 and 200 people line up at the First Presbyte- rian Church to obtain their holiday dinners. Fixing meals for that number was no small feat. Including organizing, the entire project took around a month to throw together, Burrece said. Dinner items themselves like turkey, ham, potato stuffing, green beans, pies and gravy took of food preparation as the team of volunteers braced for as many as 300 people. As indoor activities are restricted under current COVID-related rules, vol- unteers packaged meals into containers for easy transport for awaiting vehi- cles as the day saw a steady stream of drive-thru ser- vice. Some meals were even delivered to those who were unable to leave their house. Momentum for the proj- C ottage G rove www.cgsentinel.com @ DON’T JUST KINDA TV. Lawrence Crumb “Church with the fl ags.” Worship: Sunday 10:30am All Welcome ect snowballed after it first launched about a month ago, attracting dozens of volunteers from various re- sources in town including Rural Organizing Project (ROP) and Be Your Best. In addition to volunteers, the community meals were made possible by food and funding donations. The whole project was estimat- ed to cost about $2,500 in the end. And leftovers didn’t go to waste – the remaining food was handed out at a Soup’s On service the following Sunday. Despite facing the chal- lenge of first-time imple- mentation, Burrece was pleased with the outcome and thanked the communi- ty for its volunteerism. “I think it was a success,” she said. “I really appreci- ate all the volunteers that put in the effort – espe- cially the day of – and all of those who helped me in the preparation. It took a lot of community effort to get this community meal out.” Soup’s On distributes meals every Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. in the back of the ROP building at 632 E Main St. Refresh your home for the New Year Seventh-day Adventist Church 820 South 10th Street 541-942-5213 Pastor: James D.
