Weekly COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations set new highs
OHA’s COVID-19 week-
ly report released Monday
set new weekly highs for
COVID-19 cases and hos-
pitalizations for the second
consecutive week.
OHA reported 9,100
new daily cases during the
week of Monday, Nov. 23
through Sunday, Nov. 29
— a 5 percent increase over
the previous week.
Weekly hospitalizations
associated with COVID-19
rose to 398 — a 9 percent
increase — a significant
slowing from the previous
week, yet still the high-
est weekly total reported
during the pandemic.
There were 86 report-
ed COVID-19 reported
deaths, up from 61 the pre-
vious week.
People aged 20 to 49 have
accounted for 55 percent of
the cases, while people age

During the week of Nov.
22 to Nov. 28, a total of
141,356 COVID-19 tests
were administered. The
percentage of positive tests

Health insurance open enrollment ends Dec. 15
Open enrollment for
health insurance, which be-
gan Nov. 1, will end Tues-
day, Dec. 15.
Oregonians who do not
receive health insurance
through work, Medicare or
the Oregon Health Plan will
need to sign up for health
insurance at HealthCare.
gov before Dec. 15 if they
want to have coverage in
2021.
Despite the tumultuous
nature of this year, Ore-
gonians have enrolled in
health insurance at the
same levels as this same
point last year.
“We’re glad to see Ore-
gonians choosing to stay
covered during this pan-
demic,” said Chiqui Flow-
ers, administrator of the
Oregon Health Insurance
Marketplace. “But we know
there are thousands more
Oregonians out there who
could get help paying for
health insurance. There is
help available for them, but
only if they act quickly.”
Consumers can look at
plans and find out how
much of a subsidy they
are eligible for by going to
HealthCare.gov.
“You can get help pay-
ing for health insurance
based on your income,” said
Flowers. “Don’t assume you
make too much to be eligi-
ble.”
Individuals
making
$51,040 or less per year,
and families of four making
$104,800 or less, may get
help paying for coverage.

City wraps up leaf pickup
Members of the Cottage
Grove utility staff have
completed the first round
throughout the city pick-
ing up leaf piles.
This week, they are con-
tinuing to pick up leaves
using the vacuum trailer
cleaning areas which have
new leaf piles and leftover
leaves from the first round
throughout town.
The final leaf pickup is
scheduled from Monday,
Dec. 14, through Friday,
Dec. 18.
Residents are asked to
have their leaves out in
approved locations by the
end of the day Dec. 13.
The leaf drop-off loca-
tion at 3300 Row River
Road will remain open un-
til Dec. 18 for self-haul leaf
drop-off.

Virgil Delano Miller
1933-2020
Virgil Delano Miller, aged
87, died Wednesday, Decem-
ber 2, 2020 in the early morn-
ing hours with his wife, Lynn,
by his side.
He was born in McVille,
North Dakota, July 10, 1933, to
Gilman and Clarice Miller. He
resided in San Diego, with his
daughter, Melissa (Missy), son-
in-law Michael (Mike), and
two grandchildren.
Th e couple retired to Cot-
tage Grove, from Ogden, Utah,
to be with family from 1998-
2019. Virgil started his new
life in service to Cottage Grove
First Presbyterian Church as
Finance and Treasurer for 17
years. He was Treasurer of the
Cottage Grove Community
Foundation, worked part-time
for the City at the pro shop
at Middlefi eld Golf Course,
helped manage the Men’s Golf
Club and was on the board of
Th e Middlefi eld Estates Asso-
ciation.
A Veteran of the Korean
War, he graduated from NDSU
in Electrical Engineering. Vir-
gil spent his professional life as
an Aerospace Engineer for the
Minuteman Missile guidance
system, infl uential in ending
the cold war.
He is survived by his wife
of 58 years, Lynn Konvolin-
ka Miller, his son, Brad Mill-
er, daughter, Melissa (Missy)
Barland, son-in-law, Mike
Barland, two grandchildren,
Christopher Dane Barland,
(26) and Brooke Lyn Barland
(24). Brother, Myron Miller
and his wife, Kathleen, sister,
Grace Schiller.

1982-2020
Julie
Hansen
Heegard
passed away at the age of 38,
on November 18, 2020 in
Cottage Grove, Oregon. Julie
was born at McKenzie Willa-
mette Hospital June 29, 1982
in Springfi eld, Oregon. She
started school at 5 C’s in Cre-
swell, attending Delight Valley,
Lincoln Jr. High and graduated
from Cottage Grove with the
class of 1999. Julie Moved to
Seattle aft er high school to at-
tend the Art Institute. She soon
discovered she wanted to be a
Hairdresser. She received her
training at Springfi eld College
of Beauty, and she found her
passion. Julie currently worked
at Salon 7 in Cottage Grove,
and One Stop Hair Shop in
Springfi eld. She married Darin
Heegard during the summer of
2003, and they later divorced.
Julie loved helping with her
Kids activities and attending
their sporting events and music
programs. Being a mom was
her proudest accomplishment.
She played guitar and enjoyed

was an avid Oregon Ducks fan,
enjoyed trips to the Oregon
coast, annual ice fi shing trips
with her dad and family trips to
Disneyland. She also smoked
the best fi sh, and her grasshop-
per pie was awesome. She had a
wonderful quirky sense of hu-
mor and a tender heart. Julie is
survived by her children Ever-
ett and Nora of Cottage Grove,
OR; parents Diane and Brian

sister Heidi (Jason) Baker and
nephew AJ of Roseburg, OR;
grandmother Kathy Dickin-

sen. Julie leaves behind a won-
derful family of aunts, uncles,

Walter “Gene” Snook passed
away on November 24, 2020 at
the age of 91. He was small in
stature and big in heart.
Gene was born on March 10,
1929, in Cedardale, Oklahoma
to Blanche and Howard Snook.
His family moved to Sweet
Home, Oregon when Gene was
a young child. He held several
agricultural jobs as a teenager
and young adult, and eventu-
ally began his 40-year career
with Murphy Logging Com-
pany. He loved working in the
woods and driving the crum-
my, and he took great pride in
his job as a hook tender.
Gene married Cathryn Co-
chell on July 3, 1948. Th e two
eventually settled in Cottage
Grove, Oregon, where they
raised their two girls, Shelley
and Lisa. A third daughter,
Willa, passed away as an infant.
Gene worked long hours as a
logger, but he also had a pas-
sion for tending his garden and
woodworking. He made spe-
cial keepsakes for many of his
grandchildren and was always
available for gardening advice.
Following Cathryn’s passing
in 2003, Gene adopted several
new hobbies and was rarely
without his little dog, Mo-
cha. He enjoyed making jam,
splitting wood, taking long
road trips, watching Jeopardy,
reading, and eating barbeque
ribs. He took pride in his gar-
den and property and joyfully
tended them until his last day.
He loved his family and neigh-
bors and was always quick and
quiet with his generosity.
Gene will be warmly re-
membered by his loving
daughters,
Shelley
Seab-
lom and Lisa Snook, and his
nine grandchildren and 22
great-grandchildren. Gene is
survived by four siblings: Ver-
bal, Verla, Darrell, and Dar-
lene. Two brothers, Dean and
Howard Junior, preceded him
in death. Th e memory of Gene
extends beyond his family and
many people will remember
his kind and mischievous spir-

Tips for Leaf Placement in Street
3 Only piles of loose leaves will be picked up
3 Pile leaves on the street surface near the gutter, keeping gutter
and catch basins free of leaves so storm water is not obstructed
3 On streets without curbs and gutter, pile the leaves near the street
surface away from ditches
3 Stack the leaves so that they don’t block bike and traffic lanes
3 Leaves should be piled in rows so they do not block the flow of
water along the curb and do not encroach on the traffic lane
3Do not place leaves in the streets where curbside parking does
not exist. You may bring those leaves to the designated area
outside the Row River Water Treatment Plant at 3300 Row
River Road
3 Do not place your leaves in plastic bags
3 Branches will not be picked up
3 Shrub prunings and blackberry vines will not be picked up
3 Do not include rocks, metal or other debris in your leaf pile
3 Lawn clippings will not be picked up
