8A | NOVEMBER 25, 2020 Campus from A1 and high school students under the umbrella of Lane County Youth for Christ. The program combines healthy relationships with creative programs to help young people make good choices, establish a solid foundation for life, and positively impact their schools. With no students in school buildings since last March, it has been a challenge for Campus Life leaders to reach out and support middle and high school students. Calvary Chapel Youth Pastor Richard New is the director of the Campus Life High School Club. In August, he met with Cot- tage Grove High School Principal Kevin Herington to better understand the district’s plans to have stu- dents return to the class- room. Meanwhile, at the same time the Riverside Community Church, staff members said they prayed about what ways they could be attentive to the needs of the community during the pandemic. Kyle McGowen is the youth pastor at River- side Community Church, which for years has hosted the Campus Life Middle School Club and the pop- ular Taco Tuesday lunches for high school students. “We knew we had to minister in a different way than what we usually do,” McGowen said. “We wanted a safe place for stu- dents to be, particularly for those with home situations that are not well-suited for learning and for those who don’t have internet access. We soon came up with the idea of offering a drop- in center for elementary, middle and high school students at the church.” “It was a God thing,” New said. “Kyle and I had not connected much with each other during the sum- mer. After meeting with the high school principal, I invited him out for cof- fee and pitched my idea of providing a learning center to support students. “He said the Riverside staff had been thinking and praying about doing the same thing and a natu- ral partnership developed.” McGowen added, “After my meeting with Richard, we all knew we were doing something the Lord was leading us to do. We have a great facility with trained youth volunteers and we have a great connection to the internet so we rolled with it.” On Sept. 28, the drop-in Student Learning Center opened. Campus Life man- ages the middle and high school students in the two youth rooms on the second floor behind the gymnasi- um. Access is via an out- | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL side stairway on the west side of the building. The elementary program is housed in the children’s area of the church as is managed by Jan Loomis, a former teacher at Oak Park Christian School. “Jan Loomis is a member of our church who does a fantastic job running the children’s program,” Mc- Gowen said. “She is a rock star at everything she does, so having her serve these kids is a major blessing for all involved. While the youth program is build- ing slowly, the elementary learning center filled up almost right away and has a waiting list for new stu- dents.” The Campus Life-man- aged center is open ev- ery weekday, except for Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The free program offers a safe place for stu- dents to spend all or part of the school day. Current average atten- dance is 3 to 4 students who come consistently and, at one point, the pro- gram had eight students participating. Organizers hope a heightened aware- ness of the program in the broader community will increase middle and high school student participa- tion. “Throughout the day, between 8:30 and 1:45, the students log in and out of their virtual classes and we n The Northwest’s Finest Gardening Seed n Flowers, Herbs, & Shrubs n Vegetable Transplants n Fruit Trees 20 Palmer Ave. n Cottage Grove n (541) 942-0510 What’s Rotary? The socializa- tion component is a real benefit to them.” Seventh-grader Abby Stere, 12, said she comes regularly to see her friends. “It’s been frustrating not being able to go to school,” she said. “Since I’ve been coming here I’ve learned more about earth science and climate change.” Abby’s best friend, Fawn Little, said she began com- ing to spend the day with Abby. “I like the atmosphere of being with my friends and I’m comfortable because I know everyone here,” Lit- tle said. “I also like meet- ing new people so it would okay if more (students) came.” New said there are a doz- en adult volunteers who work in 2-3 hour shifts on a week-to-week basis. All volunteers must pass a background check. Duties include checking students in and out, making sure students wear masks and that COVID-19 sanitizing precautions are followed throughout the day. Kristen Hendricks is the mother of two and opens the center two mornings a week. She initially got Service Above Self involved with her teenage daughter, who no longer comes, yet Hendricks said she continues to support the project. “I enjoy hanging out with the kids because they are sweet and fun to be around,” Hendricks said. “I bring snacks, help them with school work, and I make it possible to give them the opportunity for social interaction with their peers.” New said video cameras in both youth rooms pro- vide enhanced security, especially when only one adult is present to super- vise. One mother of five chil- dren, Autumn Stere, works outside the home. Her husband, Edward, is a stay- at-home Dad.
