2B | NOVEMBER 25, 2020 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Holiday Food Box, Tree of Joy programs now open Registration is now open for the annual Hol- iday Food Box and Tree of Joy programs. Community Sharing and Tree of Joy are part- nering this year with Be Your Best and Rural Or- ganizing Project to in- crease outreach and vol- unteer support, and to add delivery options. The food box is com- plete with fresh poultry and produce and season- al canned goods. Boxes are free, limited to one application per household (box sizes will vary based on number in household). Tree of Joy is a gift-giv- ing program for children ages 0-18 in the Cottage Grove community. Both programs are funded through grant dollars and local dona- tions. Application forms are available in-person or over the phone at Com- munity Sharing, 1440 Birch Ave., by calling 541-942-2176 or visit online at www.commu- nitysharing.org/?page_ id=681. Online applications require a phone number for follow up reminder. The application period closes on today, Nov. 25. Food boxes and Tree of Joy gifts will be distrib- uted or delivered Mon- day, Dec. 21, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 675 S Seventh St. This has been a partic- ularly hard year for our community, and it is our hope that through these programs we can help relieve some of the stress that the holiday season can bring. A supportive commu- nity is a stronger com- munity. We are also calling for volunteers to help with this event on Dec. 20 and 21. Help will be needed with transporting food, assembling boxes, distri- bution, and delivery. If you would like to sign up to volunteer, email be yourbest.cg@ gmail.com. Blazing Fast Internet! For 2019, cooking was the leading cause of home structure fires, ac- counting for 19 percent of all reported incidents. On average, there are 555 cooking-caused res- idential structure fires in Oregon per year. Statewide the range/ stove was the most fre- quently reported equip- ment involved in cook- ing fires. Of these, 71 percent were from an electric powered range/ stove. All told, there were six deaths in Oregon from residential cooking fires during the past five years, or an average of slightly more than one death per year. As we enter the hol- iday season, the Office of State Fire Marshal wants to encourage ev- eryone to take extra fire safety precautions in the kitchen to ensure their holiday is fire safe and memorable. simmering, baking, or roasting foods that require long cooking times. • Check the stove or oven frequently. • Remember to keep items that may catch fire, like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels, at least three feet from the cooking area. • Roll up your shirt sleeves and avoid using clothing that may come in contact with open flames or other heat sources. • Don’t cook if you are drinking alcohol or us- ing other substances that make you drowsy. • Let your kids have fun cooking with you, but keep them three feet or more away from all cooking areas, hot food, and liquids to avoid burns Cooking safety tips: • Don’t leave cooking food on your stovetop unattended, especially when frying and sau- téing with oil. • While your turkey is cooking, don’t leave If you have a cooking your home and check on fire: it frequently. • Always keep a lid • Use a timer to mon- itor cooking times when nearby to smother small grease fires. Smother the flames by carefully slid- ing the lid over the pan. Next, turn off the burner and don’t move the pan until it is com- pletely cool. • Never pour water on a grease fire; it can splat- ter the grease and spread the fire. • In the event of a fire in your oven or micro- wave, turn the appliance off and keep the doors closed. • When in doubt, get out! Call 9-1-1 after you leave. • Because holiday fire safety includes the whole home as well as the kitchen, be sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, out- side each sleeping area, and in every bedroom. • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace them if they are 10 years old or older.
