6A | SEPTEMBER 10, 2020 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Volunteers needed for Douglas County Search and Rescue The deadline is ap- proaching and the Doug- las County Sheriff ’s Office is still seeking dedicated members of the community who are willing to volunteer their time to the Search and Rescue Division. Under Oregon Law, the Sheriff of each county is tasked with the responsi- bility of Search and Res- cue efforts. In Douglas County that means the Sheriff is responsible for the searching for lost and missing subjects within the 5,000 square miles of the county. The kind of people DCSR is looking for are motivated individuals willing to give their pre- cious time to help their community. Search and Rescue is not exclusive to any particular type of person or skill set. The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office is looking for individuals capable of physical tasks ranging from wilderness search- ing to technical rope rescues, to individuals willing to help prepare meals for search crews, or people who want to help maintain equipment for searchers in the field. If you have the desire, the Sheriff ’s Office will provide the training, at no cost. The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office Search and Rescue unit is com- prised of members of the community from age 17 to members who are re- tired. Here is a list of some of the Search and Rescue disciplines: • Mountain Rescue — Rope technical and ter- rain difficulty • Mounted Searchers — Searchers on horse- State Fire Marshal mobilizes Oregon Fire Service Gov. Kate Brown has declared the Beachie Creek and Lionshead Fires in Marion County and the Holiday Farm Fire in Lane County as Conflagrations. The Beachie Creek and Lionshead Fires were active overnight in the Santiam Canyon; the Holiday Farm Fire is active near McKenzie Bridge. The invocation of the Conflagration Act by Gov. Brown cleared the way for the State Fire Marshal to mobilize firefighters and equip- ment to assist local resources battling the fires. The Office of State Marshal’s Green Inci- dent Management Team has been mobilized to the Beachie Creek Fire and Lionshead fires and the OSFM’s Red Inci- dent Management Team has been mobilized to the Holiday Farm Fire. As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, four task forces from Marion, Benton, Linn, and Clatsop counties are deployed with the Green Team to support the Santiam Canyon communities being im- pacted by the Beachie Creek and Lionshead fires. Two task forces from Polk and Yamhill coun- ties are deployed with the Red Team. Currently, evacua- tions have been ordered near both fires by local law enforcement. In addition to its de- ployment of two IMTs, Congratulations! to our Employee of the Month Tara Blount the OSFM has sent re- sources to Klamath County to support local firefighting resources who are responding to a fire near Collier State Park. The predicted wind event has impacted much of the state. Mul- tiple requests for struc- tural firefighting re- sources have been made through the Oregon Fire Mutual Aid System. All Oregonians should monitor com- munications coming from their local emer- gency response systems and communications from local law enforce- ment agencies, who are responsible for ordering evacuations. The OSFM is asking residents to keep their fellow Oregonians and firefighters in their thoughts.
