COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | SEPTEMBER 10, 2020 | 5A Rye beer brewed to honor local ‘Rhubarb’ hits the mark T he idea was pretty simple — a crush- able late-summer IPA that would be great to take along on a fishing trip to the river. Brewstation owners and patrons think the beer’s namesake would’ve approved. Back in July, the pub was thrilled to hire one of its dear friends and reg- ular customers as a line cook. During his first Saturday shift, Derek Bear Phillips — known by many as “Rhubarb” or just “Rhu” — showed what he was made of. And the match was oh- so obvious. But by the next day, he was gone — passing away after offering just a glimpse of what might’ve been. As a tribute to his Recently, Brewstation introduced a special com- memorative brew — Rhu’s Rye IPA — in honor of Derek Bear Phillips, aka, Rhubarb (or Rhu). friend and co-worker, the pub’s Brewer, Ste- phen Mathys, did one of the things he does best: He started brew- ing. Recently, Brewsta- tion owners and cus- tomers got to try Rhu’s Rye IPA for the first time. And feedback so far has been terrific. “Everybody seems to like it,” Mathys said. “Members of Derek’s family have enjoyed it, and they’ve taken some home in growl- ers, which is really lovely to see. By that measure, it’s been a grand success.” The rye grain is present in the flavor profile of this IPA, but it won’t knock you over. Even at 7 percent alcohol and 70 IBU, Rhu’s Rye boasts a nice maltiness to balance out its hops. “It’s definitely pretty laid back. People are lik- ing it with this hot weath- er,” Mathys said. “And French, our bartender, has been recommending a neat shot of Templeton rye whiskey with it. “So we’ve sold out of Templeton.” Rhu loved to fish, he loved his beer and he loved the Brewstation. The community pub can only hope the tribute brew does Rhu proud. — by Jon Stinnett COURTESY PHOTO The Flower Basket Safe Routes to School, Fillmore project update and Gift Boutique “A Flower Shop and so much more” Creative Floral Arrangements Jewelry • Balloons Home Décor Fine Gifts Boutique Clothing & Accessories The Wildish concrete crew was on site for two days this week after pouring for curb and gutter, focusing on “tie- ins.” Tie-ins are the spac- es between the exist- ing curb and gutter and the new curb-in-gutter.
