South Lane School District
(SLSD) confirmed its first case
of COVID-19 impacting a stu-
dent on July 25 as it prepared
the release of an update to its
back-to-school model for this
fall.
The affected student, who
attends Cottage Grove High
School, had been in close prox-
imity with other high school
students who attended summer
workouts, though the district

noted that the student has not
been on campus.
“We’re
currently
work-
ing with Lane County Public
Health,” said SLSD Superinten-
dent Yvonne Curtis. “They’re in
the process of determining the
timeframe in which they need
to do the tracing and the track-
ing of the students.”
Potentially infected students
and families have been contact-
ed by LCPH, with those in close
contact with the student being
sent into a 14-day quarantine,
according to Curtis. In addi-
tion, the district has suspended
summer workouts and practic-
es until the county health au-
thority issues further guidance.
Meanwhile, on July 27, the
district released an update
shedding some light on its ap-
proach to starting the new
school year this fall.
The update, Curtis said, was
created with situations like the
recent student COVID-19 case
in mind.

Firefighters converge in CG for aerial training

(IGA) with the Oregon
Department of Trans-
portation
(ODOT)
during a city council
meeting on July 27.
The IGA will allow
the city to expand the
wastewater treatment
plant’s use of treated
effl uent for irrigation
to the I-5 interchange
at exit 174.

South Lane County Fire and
Rescue (SLCFR) played host to
a training session last weekend
as area fire authorities spread
throughout Cottage Grove sites
to practice use of their ladder
truck equipment.
“Everyone came together for
a big collaboration — a region-
al-type training for this aerial
operator class,” said SLCFR Di-
vision Chief Aaron Smith. “And
they get certification at the end
of it.”
Between SLCFR, Philomath
Fire and Rescue, Lane Fire
Authority and North Douglas
County Fire and EMS, around
two dozen fire crew mem-
bers took part in the hands-on
training over two days.
“This is a rare class that the
state training association is
putting on for our region,” said
Smith. “Today’s all about these
