10A | JULY 16, 2020 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Eugene YMCA childcare program receives funding for CG expansion U.S. Bank Foundation and Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation grants support services in low-income areas The Eugene Family YMCA has announced that the U.S. Bank Foun- dation and Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foun- dation awarded a com- bined $15,000 to support the YMCA’s expansion of afterschool child care programs to underserved regions of Lane County. “We are so grateful to U.S. Bank Foundation and Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation for recognizing that the Y’s child care fills a critical need for families,” said Eugene Family YMCA Chief Development Of- ficer Danielle Uhlhorn. “Not only are the Y’s pro- grams caring, safe and affordable, they also help students perform better in school.” Studies show children involved in afterschool enrichment programs increase their academic performance by nearly 20 percent and have fewer absences while growing academic achievement. “At U.S. Bank, we be- lieve in powering the human potential,” said Reed Jaksich, U.S. Bank Market President for Eu- gene. “By supporting the Eugene Family YMCA, we are doing just that for children and families in our community.” U.S. Bank Foundation’s $10,000 grant and Cow Creek Umpqua Indi- an Foundation’s $5,000 grant allows for success- ful expansion into Title I schools in South Lane and Bethel school dis- tricts. Title I indicates a high number of low-in- come families. “High-quality child care programs in rural areas are vital to strength- ening the social fabric of our communities,” said Carma Mornarich, Ex- ecutive Director of Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation. “The work they do is so necessary and the result is that lives are bettered.” In the fall of 2019, the YMCA expanded to Har- rison Elementary School in Cottage Grove, where 66 percent of the students are eligible for free or re- duced lunch. In early 2020, students from three more schools in Cottage Grove were invited to attend after- school care at Harrison with transportation pro- vided by the South Lane School District. The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foun- dation grant specifically supports the programs in Cottage Grove, con- sidered a high poverty hotspot, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. “Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation rec- ognized the need for high-quality child care in Cottage Grove and also the obstacles for the Y to offer these programs, which includes finding well-trained staff,” said Brian Steffen, CEO of the Eugene Family YMCA. “We expect Y child care providers to help chil- dren form positive peer relationships, complete their academic work, en- gage children in physical activity and support fam- ilies. “This funding will help us recruit staff equipped to carry out the mission.” U.S. Bank Foundation’s grant will support ex- pansion into both South Lane and Bethel school districts. The Bethel area is sim- ilarly in need of afford- able child care programs — with several schools between 66 percent and 86 percent of students el- igible for free or reduced lunch “There is no better way for the Y to step up than to care for the communi- ty’s most precious mem- bers,” said Holly Kriz-An- derson, VP of Operations and Youth Development Director for the Eugene Family YMCA. “It is our social responsibility to step up in this way, and it is only with community financial support — such as that from U.S. Bank — that the Y could serve the areas that need it most.” Cottage Grove Historical Society hosting summer scavenger hunt through July 31 The Cottage Grove Historical Society has announced that it will sponsoring a scavenger hunt this summer.
