Health authorities warn of additional pandemic scams Fraudsters have been reported taking advan- tage of the novel corona- virus pandemic to scam the public out of per- sonal information and health authorities want to make sure everyone knows what contact trac- ing is and the questions that will be asked. Though it is important to answer the call from a contact tracer as the in- formation may be vital for one’s health and that of their family, scammers may call victims and ask for unnecessary personal information. Official contact tracers will identify themselves as from a local or tribal public health authority. It will not be an automat- ed recording — contact tracer calls will always be a real person. An official contact tracer will ask you: • If you need an inter- preter in a language oth- er than English. • For your name, date of birth and where you live. • If you have any symp- toms of COVID-19. • If you need a place to stay. • If you need food or have other needs to help you stay home. • If they can contact you daily to monitor your symptoms and needs. A contact tracer will never ask for your: • Social Security Num- ber. • Bank account or credit card number. • Immigration status. Additionally, the call- er will not say you need to pay for the service or make a threat to put you or your family in jail if you don’t speak to the contact tracer. Phase 1 includes stabi- lizing Stony Point, soft- ening the sharp curves along this segment of road, and widening the road. Construction work for Phase 1 is scheduled to begin June 22. Lane County is con- tracting with Marcum and Sons to stabilize the road near Stony Point to prevent future sliding and shifting of the road. This will require ad- dressing three different landslides in a 2,500-foot section of road and in- stalling a retaining wall across the largest slide area. A second contractor will excavate and replace the landslides with soil and flexible mesh (geo- textile) material to create reinforced soil. The new road will be constructed on top of the reinforced soil and retaining wall. During construction, the road will remain open for at least one lane of bi-directional travel. The available travel lane will be a gravel/dirt surface. There may be short intervals of very limited traffic delays while construction work is in progress. A mixture of ap- proaches will be used to navigate traffic through the work site. These will likely include the use of flaggers (people who use hand signals, signs, and/ or flags to communicate if and when it is safe to proceed through a con- struction site), pilot cars (aka escort cars), and temporary traffic signals. Note that it is rec- ommended that people travelling on bicycles use alternative routes as the work zone will likely be steep and hard to navi- gate on a bicycle. Soil replacement and wall construction is ex- pected to be completed by late fall 2020. While the hope is that road widening and pav- ing will be completed this year, it is possible that it may take addition- al time to complete. The leading factor that will determine the final con- struction period is the weather; a wetter than usual summer or an early start to the rainy season could potentially extend the total construction period. • For more informa- tion about possible traf- fic impacts from Phase 1 construction, please contact Matt Young at either (541) 682-6929 or Matthew.Young@lane- countyor.gov. • For comments or questions about the proj- ect in general, please contact Sasha Vartanian at either 541-682-6598 or Sasha.Vartanian@lan- ecountyor.gov.
