SLSD kicks
off banner
program to
honor grads
To recognize the many
Cottage Grove area gradu-
ates, banners with each grad-
uating student’s name will be
hung in Bohemia Park begin-
ning this week.
Due to the coronavi-
rus COVID-19 pandemic,
in-person graduation cere-
monies have been canceled
this year. However, the South
Lane School District wants
graduating students to feel
recognized. The district is
encouraging students and
parents to come and see their
student’s banner in the park,
while keeping a 6-foot dis-
tance from others.
Each school in Cottage
Grove will be represented, in-
cluding Academy for Charter
Education (ACE), Al Kenne-
dy, Child’s Way and Cottage
Grove High School.
Thanks to the Senior All
Night Party Committee, all
graduating students will have
the chance to win a raffle
prize as a part of the gradu-
ation event.
For Cottage Grove High
School students only: Students
will have the opportunity to
take pictures in the gradu-
ation cruise on June 6. Pic-
tures can be picked up along
with the student banners.
Banners will be brought
down and students may col-
lect their banners from the
curbside of City Hall at 400 E.
Main Street on Monday, June
22, from 8 a.m. to noon, and
1 to 6 p.m.
Each student will receive a
senior envelope with the ban-
ner.

Dorena
celebrates its
centenarian
D
orena resident Lillian Arnold cele-
brated her 100th birthday on May
22, with a car parade full of
friends, family and neighbors joining in
the occasion. Born in Philadelphia in
1920, Lillian lived all over the United
States, following her husband’s Navy
career with their five children. They set-
tled in Santa Clara, Calif., for many years
before retiring to Sunriver, Ore., then
moving to Dorena a couple of years ago
to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Lillian is a Master Quilter and has given
seminars and appeared in quilting mag-
azines. She is particularly known for her
intricate Baltimore Album quilts.

Annual CGHS ‘Old Schoolmates’ reunion canceled; moved to 2021
According to the book Cot-
tage Grove—Golden Was the
Past, class reunions of the
CGHS Lions began in 1932.
Then, in 1952, The Old School-
mates Group was organized
and began hosting annual re-
unions. For many years, re-
unions were held at the Cottage
Grove Elks Lodge. But eventu-
ally, attendance became so big
that it had to move. Annually,
more than 350 Lions alumni
attend — with several schol-
arships awarded to that year’s
graduating Lions.
For the past 16 years, the
event has been held on the
first Friday each August at the
current Cottage Grove High
School. To belong to the group,
individuals must have attend-
ed or graduated from Cottage
Grove High School 50 years ago
or more. On the 50th anniver-
sary of a class’ graduation, that
class is considered the Honored
Class and is welcomed to the
CG Old Schoolmates.
Unfortunately, this year’s re-
union has been canceled due to
the restrictions necessitated in
response to reducing the spread
of COVID-19. Cancellation
notices have been sent out to
those with email addresses. In
addition, coordinators for each
class are trying to notify all
known former attendees.
Because of this year’s cancel-
lation, the cases of 1970 and
1971 will be welcomed into
The Old Schoolmates Group
when it meets next year, Aug.
6, 2021.
