How to apply for food, childcare, cash assistance from home
Due to the COVID-19
pandemic, Oregonians are
facing unprecedented eco-
nomic instability and food
insecurity.
As Oregon continues
to maintain physical dis-
tancing rules, the Oregon
Department of Human
Services (DHS) wants to re-
mind you that you can ap-
ply for food, cash and child-
care assistance from home.
While many DHS offices
are still open to the public,
members of the public are
encouraged to apply online
at https://govstatus.egov.
com/or-dhs-benefits.
The online application
does experience heavy traf-
fic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
which causes it to be un-
available intermittently. If
possible, use the online ap-
plication in the early morn-
ing or late evening hours.
If you are not able to ac-
cess the online application,
call your local DHS office,
which can email or mail an
application.
You can also apply for
benefits over the phone.
Most assistance provid-
ed by DHS can completed
without visiting an office in
person.
For those needing to vis-
it an office in person, call
first. Offices have imple-
mented physical distancing
measures and may be able
to help by phone.
To find your local office,
childcare providers or food
pantries, contact 211info:
• By calling 2-1-1 from
any phone
• Text your zip code to

• By email at help@211in-
fo.org

Reminder from Douglas County: Third trimester taxes due by May 15
The Douglas County
Tax Collection Office is
reminding residents that
the deadline for the third
trimester payment for the
2019-20 Property Tax year
is fast approaching.
The third trimester pay-
ment must be received or
postmarked no later than
May 15 to avoid interest
and penalties. At this time,
the State of Oregon has not
extended the property tax
due dates, and the county
does not have the authority
to extend the due dates.
The Tax Office plans to
mail statements starting to-
day, April 29.
Douglas County Court-
house now open:
As a reminder, the
Douglas County Board of
Commissioners
official-
ly reopened the Douglas
County Courthouse. The
reopening at the Douglas
County Courthouse incor-
porates very strict social
distancing procedures for
county employees, as well
as for the visiting public.
County commissioners
continue to urge citizens to
follow the Governor’s Exec-
utive Orders to ‘Stay Home,
Save Lives.’
We are asking that the
visiting public:
• Only visit the court-
house if necessary and stay
home if you are sick
• Continue to utilize our
online, email and phone
systems first
• Follow posted guide-
lines for entering offices
and standing in lines
• Maintain at least 6-feet
physical distance, wash
your hands, wear a mask
and use hand-sanitizer
• Masks and hand sani-
tizer will be available upon
request
Payments can be made in
person at:
Douglas County Tax Col-
lection Office, Room 205, at
the Douglas County Court-
house, 1036 S.E. Douglas
Ave., in Roseburg, Oregon.
There is also a “Tax Drop
Box” located in the hall-
way outside the Douglas
County Tax Collection
Office. And a tax payment
drop box is located outside
at the bottom of the Court-
house steps.
Payments can be made by
mail:
You can mail your tax
payment using the provid-
ed payment envelope and
appropriate postage. Note
that due to recent changes
with the US Postal Service,
mail is often transported
out-of-town for processing
and postmark. Be sure to
mail your tax payment early
to avoid late penalties.
Medicare counseling appointments now available by phone
Thousands of Lane
County residents get their
Medicare questions an-
swered by certified Medi-
care counselors working
with the Senior Health In-
surance Benefits Assistance
(SHIBA) program.
SHIBA is committed
to continuing to provide
Medicare counseling ser-
vices during the COVID-19
pandemic.
Prior to this time, Lane
County based Senior and
Community Centers have
been taking client requests
and scheduling in-person
sessions.
With those facilities now
closed, the State SHIBA of-
fice is coordinating phone
counseling sessions with
Lane County SHIBA vol-
unteers. They can provide
free, immediate assistance
for people currently on
Medicare or those com-
ing onto Medicare either
through age (65) or from
disability.
People on the Oregon
Health Plan who are being
transitioned to Medicare
are especially good candi-
dates for SHIBA help.
Medicare-related deci-
sions can be complicated
and consequential. SHIBA
counselors provide free, ob-
jective, unbiased informa-
tion, answer general Medi-
care questions, help people
understand available insur-
ance options and help them
learn whether they qualify
for income-related benefits,
including Medicare cost
subsidies.
Anyone who needs
help can schedule tele-
phone-based
counseling
appointments by calling
800-722-4134.
All counseling is con-
ducted by local certified
Medicare counselors.
If you are not able to
write the phone number
down, do an Internet search
for healthcare Oregon gov-
ernment or something sim-
ilar and find the section for
senior healthcare. You can
also contact any local Medi-
care insurance agents.

COAST FORK NURSING CENTER
Community Sharing has received many donations during the COVID-19
pandemic. We are very grateful and are pleased to announce a few of the large
donations.
Community Sharing received $2,500 from United Way of Lane County for
food assistance. We will be purchasing food with these funds to maintain our
food inventory and increase the variety of food distributed. Food boxes remain
available Monday through Friday from 11 am until 3:30 pm at our pantry (1440
Birch Avenue). Income expectations have increased to 300% FPL and limits on
the number of boxes available have been increased. We are also preparing our
food boxes in advance and distributing them outside to limit contact during this
outbreak.
Community Sharing received $30,000 from the Oregon Community
Foundation for housing assistance. We will be using these funds to help individuals
and families in South Lane County with rent payments. Our waiting list opens
May 1 st at 11 am and folks can call or come in (with COVID-19 restrictions)
to get on the list. Households on the waiting list will be served fi rst come, fi rst
served while funds last – getting on the list does not guarantee assistance. Our
housing waiting list will likely remain open for the near future.
Community Sharing received $40,000 from the Woodard Foundation, through
the Cottage Grove Community Foundation, to be used to help individuals and
families in South Lane County as needed. Our board has allocated $30,000
to be used for food and housing assistance and will decide how best to direct
the remaining $10,000 next month. Th ose funds will be used for basic needs
assistance, housing assistance or energy assistance.
We would also like to thank the individuals and organizations who have
provided support to us in the last couple of months. We have received numerous
fi nancial donations and outstanding volunteer support that have helped us stay
open – THANK YOU!
