Richard Stephen How-
ard passed away March 27,
2020. He was born to Stephen
L. Howard and Alice Mildred
Rissue in Cottage Grove, Ore-
gon September 11, 1934
He attended school in
Cottage Grove through the
11th grade, when he decided
going to work was his prior-
ity. His kids were so proud
when in 1991 at the age of 56
he returned to education and
received his GED.
On November 14, 1953 he
married the love of his life,
Unica Beatres Crawford. Th ey
were married for 66 years. Th ey
had 5 children, Sharon Wino-
na, Stephen Dale, Marion Sid-
ney, Ereena Dee, and Raymond
Timothy.
He owned the Cottage
Grove Taxi service from 1963
– 65. He worked for Weyerhae-
user Company for 33 years and
retired in 1997. Aft er retiring
he started working at Magnolia
Gardens, where he stayed for
17 years.
He enjoyed bowling and
golfi ng, woodworking and put-
ting a smile on the face of those
around him.
He was preceded in death
by his brother David L. How-
ard and his Grandson An-
thony Glenn Howard. He is
survived by his sister Alice
Eleanor Coop, his wife Unica,
his children, 14 grandchildren,
10 great grandchildren, and
numerous nephews and nieces.
He was affi liated with the
Cottage Grove Congregation
of Jehovah’s witnesses.
Ronald “Ron” Lee Ellis,
80, of Cottage Grove passed
away March 22, 2020. He was
born October 27, 1939 in
Armathwaite, Tennessee to
parents Clarence and Reba
(Payne) Ellis. Ron attended
Cottage Grove High School
and then went into the US Ma-
rine Corp Reserves. He mar-
ried Shirley Stephenson De-
cember 30, 1957 in Roseburg,
Oregon. Ron was a mechanic
working mainly on vehicles in
the agricultural fi eld. He tin-
kered on anything he thought

ARREST
March 30 — The Cot-
tage Grove Police De-
partment reported an
assault having occurred
at a residence in Cottage
Grove.
Officers
responded
to a 911 call regarding a
physical domestic dis-
turbance. The first re-
sponding officer arrived
to find the victim’s head
bleeding.
Upon further inves-
tigation, officers deter-
mined that Valora Rive-
ra-Waddell, 50, and Jason
Peeples, 48, approached
the victim’s residence and
began yelling and mak-
ing threats to provoke
the victim into coming
outside. The male victim
told them both to leave
numerous times when
Peeples pushed the vic-
tim and a physical fight
ensued in the front yard
of the residence.
A witness saw the vic-
tim being attacked in the
yard by both Peeples and
Rivera-Waddell. The vic-
tim suffered blows to the
head. Peeples held the
victim down while Rive-

Wheels (SLW) board of
directors recently an-
nounced its decision to
suspend all transporta-
tion services locally and
to the Eugene/Spring-
field areas.
The decision went
into effect this past
Monday, March 30.
This will continue
until further notice.

restored and modifi ed many
vehicles in his lifetime. As he
became more ill, he would take
old clocks and bring them to
life, many of which were on
his walls at his time of death.
Ron was also comforted by
his beloved dog Diva. He is
survived by his wife Shirley;
daughter Debby Roman of
Roseville, CA; son Ron Ellis of
Pleasant Hill, OR; son Vince
Ellis of Cottage Grove, OR; son
Russell Ellis of Cottage Grove,
OR; sister Wilene Hultberg
of Corvallis, OR; sister Jean-
nie Needham of Pleasant Hill,
OR; 11 grandchildren, and 7
great-grandchildren. A private
family graveside service was
held at Pleasant Hill Ceme-
tery. Arrangements in the care
of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral
Chapel, Cottage Grove, Ore-
gon.
Mark Monsive, 60, of Cot-
tage Grove passed away, from
unexpected natural causes,
on March 22, 2020. Mark was
born April 14, 1959 in San Jose,
California to Eugene and Jean
(Rankin) Monsive.
He was a longtime resident
of Cottage Grove and moved
to Oregon with his parents
in 1969 from California. He
graduated from Cottage Grove
High School in 1977 and was
on the track team.
On September 17, 1987,
in Reno, Nevada he married
Devone Marie Lockard.
Mark worked for LaValle’s
ra-Waddell continued to
assault him, according to
a police report.
Peeples was cited for
Assault 4 and released.
Rivera-Waddell was tak-
en into custody at the
Lane County Jail and
charged with Assault 4,
Harassment, Intimida-
tion and Unlawful Sexual
Penetration.
The case was referred
to the Lane County Dis-
trict Attorney’s office for
prosecution.

an avid greenhouse gardener
and enjoyed playing computer
games. He had a big heart and
was known as the “Gentle Gi-
ant” among his friends.
He is survived by his lov-
ing wife, Devone Monsive,
his father, Eugene Monsive of
Cottage Grove, two brothers
and their wives, Tom (Debra)
Monsive of Cottage Grove and
Robert (Colette) Monsive of St.
Helens and numerous nieces
and nephews. He also leaves,
Tea, his devoted dog. He was
preceded in death by his moth-
er, Lorena Jean Monsive and a
sister, Pamela Jean Monsive.

Lora Lee Jensen
1931-2020
1936 – 2020
Our father, Richard V. Var-
gas, age 89 went to be with
the Lord on March 23, 2020.
He was born on a sugarcane
plantation on the Big Island of
Hawaii on January 15, 1931,
the sixth of eight children born
to John and Tomacia Vargas.
He graduated from Pittsburgh
High School in 1949 and im-
mediately joined the navy. He
served as an Electrician’s Mate
P Second Class aboard the
U.S.S. Jason during the Kore-
an confl ict, and loved his time
traveling Japan. He married
Mary Rodrigues on April 10,
1954. Th e couple were togeth-
er for almost sixty-six years.
For thirty years he worked as
a telecommunications install-
er for AT&T and was proud of
his crew’s record for earning
high effi ciency marks. Th e job
combined physical and men-
tal work, building the phone
system when cables, switch-
es, and relays were housed in
a physical plant. Many of his
colleagues became life-long
friends. He divided his life be-
tween Hayward, California and
Cottage Grove, Oregon.
As a Hawaiian-born Puer-
to Rican, he was very proud
of his heritage. Th e unique
music, food, and customs of
Puerto Rico blended beauti-
fully with Hawaiian culture.
Richard was a believer in the
King James Bible, a proud
member of Th e American Le-
gion, and an avid golfer. He
is survived by his wife, Mary
Vargas, his four children Jamie
Vargas (Diane), David Var-
gas (Richelle), Marita Vargas,
and Laurie Hammond (Scott),
thirteen grandchildren, one
great-grandchild; and three
sisters, Priscilla Maschek, Lib-
by Luxemberg and Marilyn
Sanchez, and a large number of
nieces and nephews. Details for
a memorial service at Cottage
Grove Bible Church will be an-
nounced later.

Lora Lee Jensen, also known
as “Lori”, of Cottage Grove,
OR passed away peacefully in
late aft ernoon on March 21,
2020 with her family nearby,
and with the warmth of spring
sunshine and fresh garden air
at her opened patio door. She
was 83 years old. Th e staff at
Pete Moore Hospice House in
Eugene provided care and com-
fort during her fi nal days. She
received visits from her son and
daughter-in-law Mark & Mary
Storaasli,
grand-daughters
Hannah and Amanda Storaas-
li, great-granddaughters Helen
and Amelia, and their sweet
Labrador named Sage. All seven
had just arrived via automobile
from Austin, TX. Daughter Jeri
Carson of Cottage Grove also
got to spend precious fi nal mo-
ments with her best friend that
she called “mom”.
Lora Lee was born April
23, 1936 in Kalispell, Montana
to parents Harry and Hazel
Hoiland. She joined two old-
er sisters, Shirley and Carol,
completing the Hoiland family
of fi ve. As the youngest in her
family, she enjoyed a privileged
and carefree childhood in a
small town, attending public
schools, and forming important
and has attended American
River College in Sacramen-
to, California, studying Food
Management. Naomi was the
fi rst woman to serve on the
Gervais, Oregon City Council,
later becoming the Mayor, Re-
tirement center manager, cor-
porate business owner, teacher
aide, foster parent, fi eld laborer
in many Willamette Valley har-

McGarry was born in Halsey,
Oregon, on August 30, 1933.
She entered peacefully into
glory on March 10, 2020, with
family at her side. Her par-
ents are Maryann Th ompson
and Homer Ivan Toedtemeier.
Naomi’s siblings are Marjorie
Noble and Robert Earl. On
July 3, 1950, Naomi was mar-
ried to Robert Campbell Mc-
Garry. Together they raised
seven children: Valerie Jean,
Edgar Braderick, Robert Ho-
mer, Valina Jane, Michael Pat-
rick, Vashti Jewel and Vanessa
Pearl. Grandchildren and great
grandchildren total 49 and
counting! Like a multi-faceted
diamond , she has served many
other roles as well with a signa-
ture fl air and diplomacy. She is
an active member of the body
of Christ and remembered
most for her strong faith in
God which motivates Naomi
to help others in genuine ways.
During diffi cult times, she has
said, “Family, faith and caring
friends give me courage to
keep going: to trust that tomor-
row will be better.” She gradu-
ated from Central Linn High
School in Brownsville, Oregon,
vests including hops, cherries,
beans and berries; these are but
a few of her endeavors. Mrs.
McGarry’s hobbies and inter-
ests include sewing, quilting,
crocheting, stamp collecting,
reading,
hunting,
teaching
Sunday school classes, scher-
enschnitte, ceramics, travel-
ing, music, theater and the
arts. Always the lady, Naomi
has off ered to many her wise
counsel and guidance in a style
that is known for its authentic-
ity, reality and sincerity. Her
no-nonsense approach to life
is contagious, creating in oth-
ers an inspiration to be all one
can be. She has been ushered
in through heaven’s door and
is in the presence of the LORD.
Naomi joins her beloved hus-
band, Robert Campbell, sis-
ter, Marjorie, two sons, Edgar
Braderick and Michael Patrick,
grandson, Marlin Bradley and
granddaughter, Naomi Eve.

early friendships that she nour-
ished carefully and maintained
throughout her lifetime even
aft er moving miles away in later
years. Her capacity for loving
others unconditionally, and for
cherishing the uniqueness of
every individual, was certainly
a key trait.
Devoutly Christian, her par-
ents had shared with her their
deep faith in God. Her moth-
er was the pianist for the local
Assembly of God church so
this pretty much guaranteed
Lora Lee would attend church
and Sunday School on Sun-
day mornings, Sunday evening
church, Wednesday prayer
meetings, revival meetings, and
church camps. She learned that
the most important of all Jesus’
teachings was that we should
“Love One Another”. Indeed,
she exemplifi ed that ideal for
her entire lifetime. Observant,
sharp, and sensitive to those
needing compassion or help
with life struggles, Lora Lee al-
ways sought and found many
opportunities to help ease oth-
ers’ pain and suff ering wherever
she could.
In 1952, Lora Lee Hoiland
married
her
high-school
sweetheart, a local boy named
Dale Storaasli. Together they
had a 1950’s family of young
“baby-boomers”, and they re-
mained mostly in the town of
Kalispell, in Montana’s Flathead
Valley near Glacier National
Park. Dale and Lora Lee were
blessed with four children that
they named Mark, Jeri, Victor,
and Harry.
Her fi rst marriage lasted over
nineteen years. Th en, she found
herself facing new challenges as
a single mom of teenaged chil-
dren at Silver Strand Beach in
Ventura County, CA. It was a
big change. She had loved being
a stay-at-home-mom in Mon-
tana, but she had to accept the
reality of being on her own for
the fi rst time in her life. De-
termination to succeed and a
strong work ethic helped her to
build a new life where she very
capably supported her children.
She went back to college, and
she began a long career work-
ing for the State of California,
initially as a Psychiatric Tech-
nician at Camarillo State Hospi-
tal. Later, she moved into high-
er management as a Nursing
Coordinator at Agnews State
Hospital in northern California
where she worked until her re-
tirement.
A second brief marriage in
the San Francisco Bay area to
Samuel Brannen was happy but
ended just a little over a year
later when Sam died young,
stricken by a heart attack. Her
third marriage in 1982 to Phil-
lip Jensen in Fremont, CA was
much longer and a joyful en-
deavor for both. Since Phil had
children previously with his
fi rst wife during the same years
that “Lori” had been having her
own children, their children
were almost all grown and gone.
Over the next 33 years together
until Phil’s death in 2015, they
had adventures abroad, enjoyed
museums, attended art and mu-
sic events, acquired treasures at
garage sales, and just generally
enjoyed life keeping busy with
multiple interests and hobbies
at home, particularly aft er mov-
ing to Cottage Grove in 1999.
Lora Lee is survived by her
son Mark and his family, her
daughter Jeri, and many niec-
es and nephews in addition
to the much-loved and large
blended-extended family she
acquired during her marriage
to Phillip Jensen. Lora Lee was
preceded in death by her par-
ents, her sisters, her son Victor,
her son Harry, and her late-hus-
band Phil.
A memorial gathering has
not been planned due to the
COVID-19 pandemic. In lieu
of fl owers, Lora Lee’s family
suggests that perhaps a dona-
tion to NAMI Lane County, or
to South Lane Mental Health,
or to any worthy charity of one’s
choice would be appropriate in
honor of this wonderful wom-
an. Lora Lee Jensen will be re-
membered fondly and missed
by all who had the pleasure of
knowing her.
