• Lane County has had no
positive COVID-19 tests as
of 8 a.m. on March 10.

Over this last weekend, the
Governor’s Office declared
a state of emergency. This
opens up a funding stream
for resources and assistance
through Oregon Health Au-
thority, which is leading the
response efforts with Oregon
Emergency Management.
We have prepared declara-
tion documentation so that
we can move quickly if we
start seeing cases locally or
the disease spread changes.

Health provide a work release
letter for me or my employ-
ees?

Town hall to address local climate change action
Climate Action Cottage
Grove, Forest Web and
Sustainable Cottage Grove
will be hosting a Climate
Action Town Hall this Sat-
urday, March 14, at the Cot-
tage Grove Armory (628 E.
Washington Ave.), for com-
munity members and local
officials to participate in a
forum on ways the City of
Cottage Grove can reach
the goal of being carbon
neutral by the year 2030.
The event will include
speakers, information ta-
bles and discussion sessions
to work on possible solu-
tions.
Speaking at the event will
be Tao Orion of Resilience
Permaculture Design, LLC,
and author of Beyond the
War on Invasive Species:
A Permaculture Approach
to Ecosystem Restoration
and Matt McRae, Climate
Policy Strategist for Our
Children’s Trust. They will
be discussing topics such
as the science of climate
change, the impacts of cli-
mate change, and how to
develop the climate actions
and policies necessary to
achieve a stable climate.
Organizers describe the
town hall as an interactive
event where the residents
can participate in a com-
munity conversation on
how Cottage Grove can
become a more resilient,
greener community, learn
about Climate Change and
discuss what it means for
Cottage Grove. Activities
will include presentations
on climate impacts on the
Willamette Valley, Transi-
tion Towns, Climate Action
Plans and grassroots proj-
ects. A significant portion
of the day’s schedule will
be for attendees to partic-
ipate in breakout sessions
to brainstorm ideas to im-
prove our cities carbon
footprint and become more
resilient in the face of a
changing climate.
The Climate Action
Town Hall is the culmina-
tion of a series of events
which began with the Cli-
mate Strike and March held
in Cottage Grove last Sep-
tember. Since then, the or-
ganizing groups have held a
monthly educational series
of films and lectures on the
environmental issues facing
the planet at this critical
time. More events, work-
shops, and presentations
will follow in the months to
come.

Paul R. Boehner, 94, passed
away February 28, 2020. Born
in Philadelphia, PA, Paul joined
the Marines at 17 and served in
WWII as a radar operator on
Okinawa and Tori Shima. Af-
ter fi nishing his bachelor’s de-
gree at Penn State, Paul taught
at public schools for 35 years,
and was a Lincoln Junior High
science teacher for 22 years
in Cottage Grove, Oregon;
known for weekly labs and
fi eld trips for his CONECO
class (Conservation and Ecol-
ogy). He was also active in the
teacher’s union and other edu-
cational organizations. Eagle
Scout honoree, Paul served as
scoutmaster for several troops
for over 20 years. Combining
his passion for nature and ed-
ucation, Paul worked diligently
to help save a remnant of old
growth forests from logging to
use for education and research,
called Boehner Woods (www.
forestweb-cg.org/saving-boeh-
ner-woods), where he had tak-
en students and near where he
completed his Master’s degree
research project. He wrote and
published songs including a
musical, “Yellowstone”, a trib-
ute to where he worked many
summers in his youth. He
lived 56 years in Cottage Grove.
Paul was preceded in death
(by only 5 months) by his be-
loved wife of 40 years, Frances

for charitable giving and caring
for all living things. Paul met
his fi rst wife, Katherine (Grif-
fus) Boehner (deceased) when
they worked at Yellowstone
NP during the summers and
raised four children together:
Paula (deceased), Peggy, Guy
and Patricia. Paul is survived
by daughter Peggy Boehner
(Robert) and grandchildren
Shelby and Kodi (Mike) and
great-grandchildren
Chris-
tian and Charlotte; son Guy
Boehner; and daughter Patri-
cia (Bahman, deceased, and
partner Mark) and grandchil-
dren Ashkon and Ryan. Paul’s
stepchildren are Lyn (Val de-
ceased, grandchildren Vanessa
and Gabriel); Jagat Joti Singh
(Kartar Kaur); and Nancy
(Coghan). His extended fam-
ily are spread throughout the
United States. Paul and Fran’s
remaining rescued felines are
Penelope, Whiskers, and Ash-
ley Wilkes. A memorial is be-
ing planned for a future date.
