Gibbs Ave n Friday, Feb. 28, the historic Cot- tage Grove bank building, 609 Main Street, will host an open house to update the public on the process of the building’s complete restoration. The open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m. to coin- cide with the commu- nity’s popular monthly Downtown Art Walk. Built in 1904, the bank building once housed two of Cottage Grove’s first banks, in addition to some of its most recogniz- able early businesses and fraternal organizations. In recent years, howev- er, the building had fallen into disrepair, and years of alterations had distorted its historic character. In 2018, local real estate agent and marketer Len Blackstone and his wife, Deb, decided to help the community they love by purchasing and renovat- ing its “biggest, ugliest building,” said Len Black- stone. Their eventual plan — a mix of business and office spaces downstairs and newly renovated apartments upstairs — is in character with the building’s historic uses, and it aims to bring pro- fessionals downtown to 4 p.m. Anime Club Cottage Grove Public Library 700 E. At present, half of the building’s upstairs apart- ments have already been rented, and the first ten- ants following the renova- tion are set to move in at the beginning of March. Friday’s open house will be the last time for the public to see the apart- ments before becoming occupied. Each features 16-foot high cove ceilings; lofts with wrought-iron rail- ings; new kitchens with stainless steel appliances; granite-like countertops and custom cabinets; washer-dryer and pan- tries; seven-foot win- dows with deep window sills and children’s safety latches; bathrooms with old-fashioned floor tiles and porcelain tub show- ers, and heat pumps. Previous open house events at the bank build- ing have hosted more than 400 guests for build- ing tours, and organizers expect this month to be no different.
