COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2019 | 3B Lions from B1 ons starters that were too much for North Valley to handle. Sophomore Gracie Arnold and ju- nior Matty Ladd — Cot- tage Grove’s twin towers in the post — combined to score 32 of the Lions’ 65 total points and ju- nior point guard Mikaela Blomquist, despite scor- ing only nine points, was the defensive and offen- sive cog that made the whole team go. “I feel, as I tell her, I have great confidence in her being our floor gen- eral,” Eastburn said of his point guard. “She does a great job, has really good skills, smart kid, under- stands the game … She really puts us in good positions out there.” As the season pro- gresses and games be- come more meaningful, the Lady Lions nonethe- less have things to work on. Many of the players on the basketball roster participate in volleyball as well — a team defined by its talent as well as its youth, a kind of inexpe- rience that would rear its head in tight games against quality oppo- nents. So far in basket- ball, Eastburn is noticing similar trends that he hopes to stamp out early in the year. “They were a little bit more relaxed tonight. When we’ve played some tougher teams [like Gladstone and Hidden Valley], they’ve pressed a little bit and that’s hurt them. They’ve gotten into their own heads, but Imagine The Difference You Can Make DONATE YOUR CAR 1-844-533-9173 FREE TOWING TAX DEDUCTIBLE Help Prevent Blindness Get A Vision Screening Annually Ask About A FREE 3 Day Vacation Voucher To Over 20 Destinations!!! 911 E. When they come to practice, they always give their best effort … so the op- portunity to get better is there and I know they will.” Seth Hutchison’s boys team, itself a young ros- ter, is also still working out some kinks. Many of the players are still get- ting used to playing with one another in a game that rewards familiar- ity and team play. The start to the season has been less than desired, but there are five under- classmen firmly in the team’s playing rotation, so the outlook for this season and beyond could change quickly. Both Lions teams head out today, Dec. 19, for the three-day Seaside Holiday Tournament at Seaside High School be- fore beginning their two- week holiday break. not much you can do,” said head coach Rob Parker of their shaky first half. “But we made some adjustments [at halftime]. That’s what got us all the steals in the second half and led to easy baskets.” The girls exited the locker room focused for the rest of the game, out- scoring the Devils 21-2 in the third quarter and taking an insurmountable 25-point lead into the final period. “They made an adjustment and then we had to make one too,” Parker said. “That’s why it’s nice to have those se- niors, because sometimes they know what to do, how to adjust before I say it.” For the Lowell game, those seniors happened to be Kieryn Carnes and Sa- die Olson. Carnes led the way with 15 points, two rebounds, three assists and six steals while Olson contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals. After losing game one of the tourna- ment to Reedsport, 57-33, the Elkton boys (2-5) were suddenly looking to break a two-game losing streak in their Saturday matchup with Lowell. The Elks held a 15-point lead late in the third quarter, but Lowell senior Taysian Williamson spurred a come- back, scoring 10 of his 15 total points in the second half and cut- ting the lead to one with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Devils a chance to take the lead, but their final attempt failed. Lowell fouled one more time, sending Clevenger to the line who hit one of two with under one second on the clock, sealing the win 43-41. “That was a young team trying to learn how to win a close game,” said head coach Gary Trout. “Even our older players don’t have a lot of expe- rience, so this is new to them. It wasn’t pretty, but we got it done.” Elkton’s youth is headlined by fresh- men Cash Boe and Alex Allen, who stand 6 feet 2 inches and 6 feet 4 inches respectively. “It seems like we’re playing se- nior-dominated teams every night that have 6-foot-6-inch kids,” Trout said. “Cash and Alex are used to being the big dominant ones back in grade school, and now they’re not. They’re trying to figure that part out of it too, so it’s a growing process.” For Boe’s part, his impressive fresh- man season continued as he led the team with 22 points, over half the Elks’ total. On the North Douglas side, the girls (6-0) beat Lowell 38-21 and Reedsport 79-23 as their defense continues to shut down opponents. The Warriors are currently ranked #12 in the OSAA 1A state rankings with three games remaining before the league schedule begins. The boys (4-2) split their games at the Winter Invitational, beating Low- ell 60-46 on Friday and succumbing to a large, athletic Reedsport team 55-45 on Saturday. Both Warriors’ squads pick back up again on Fri., Dec. 20, once again taking on the Lowell Devils in an away game.
