Community invited to give housing code input
The City of Cottage
Grove is proposing a
score of changes to the
Cottage Grove Develop-
ment Code to encourage
a greater range of housing
mix and housing density.
The goal of this work is
to meet needs identified
in the city’s 2018 Hous-
ing Needs Analysis and to
comply with the recently
adopted HB 2001.
These changes, recom-
mended by the Cottage
Grove Residential De-
velopment Code Audit
Committee, will come to
the Planning Commis-
sion for a public hearing
on Dec. 18.
Community members
interested in sharing their
housing code ideas can
present them during a
series of open houses on
Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The city will be pre-
senting information and
taking comments at City
Hall, 400 E. Main St.,
from 2 to 3 p.m. that day,
and also from 7 to 8 p.m.

Two-day climate series to begin Friday with documentary
On Friday, Nov. 8,
from 7 to 9 p.m., there
will be a free screening
of the multi award-win-
ning documentary “A
Plastic Ocean,” followed
by a presentation from
David Gardiepy.
Released in 2016 by
explorers Craig Leeson
and Tanya Streeter and a
team of international sci-
entists, “A Plastic Ocean”
is a documentary film
that demonstrates the
staggering scope of the
environmental disaster
affecting all the oceans
of the planet.
The team travelled to
20 locations around the
world over four years to
explore the fragile state
of our oceans and dis-
cover alarming truths
about plastic pollution
and reveal working solu-
tions that can be applied
now.
After the film, Gar-
diepy will give a pre-
sentation on recycling
— both plastics and
curbside — as well as
discuss how waste driv-
en by over-consumerism
is impacting the planet
and ways to reduce our
carbon footprint.
Gardiepy, who was
featured in a recent
edition of The Cottage
Grove Sentinel, founded
the local nonprofit Eco-
Generation to develop
collection solutions for
plastics in our commu-
nity. He hosts recycling
efforts, addressing the
serious need for plas-
tic recycling options in
Lane County.
The film will be shown
at the Cottage Grove
Community Center, 700
E Gibbs Ave., in Cottage
Grove.
Then, on Saturday,
Nov. 9, there will be a
plastics collection event
hosted by EcoGene-
ration at the Cottage
Grove Armory, 628 E
Washington Ave., from 1
to 4 p.m.
EcoGeneration
will
be collecting #2, 4 and
5 plastics that are clean
and label-free. Bring
recyclable plastics or
simply drop by to learn
more about EcoGenera-
tion’s collection program
or to get involved as a
volunteer.
Both free events are
hosted by Climate Ac-
tion CG, EcoGeneration,
Forest Web and Sustain-
able Cottage Grove.
Volunteers needed to help with cold weather shelter program
Beds for Freezing
Nights is preparing for its
12th season of offering a
warm bed on the cold-
est of winter nights. A
shelter will open at Our
Lady of Perpetual Help
Catholic Church, 1025
N. 19th St. in Cottage
Grove, when the average
temperature drops below
29 degrees from Nov. 15
through March 31.
Two volunteers are
needed to staff the shel-
ter during each of the
following shifts: 6 to 11
p.m., 10:45 p.m. to 4 a.m.
and 3:45 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Responsibilities
in-
clude setting up/taking
down shelter supplies,
checking guests in and
out and supervising the
shelter.
Volunteers are re-
quired to undergo a $10
background check and
attend the Saturday, Nov.
9 training meeting at
OLPH from 10 a.m. to
noon.
Volunteers will be as-
signed a shift according
to their availability when
the shelter is activated.

will conduct its annual
Holiday Food Drive.
To make a canned or
