COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2019 | 3B Local Sports Wrap-up ODFW from B1 Cottage Grove FISHING Girls soccer: The sixteenth-ranked Lions (8-6 overall, 6-2 league) had two games on the docket last week, split- ting the pair with one win and one loss. Cottage Grove defeated Junction City (0-13-1, 0-7-1) 4-0 on Tues., Oct. 22 in their first match of the week, completing a season sweep of the Tigers. The sledding got tougher on Thurs., Oct. 24 when the Lions lost to fourth-ranked Marist Catholic (12-0-2, 8-0) 5-0 at home. Nonetheless, Cottage Grove’s 6-2 league record gives them a second-place finish in the Sky-Em League and an automatic playoff berth. The Lions will spend this week awaiting their first postseason matchup and round one will be held on Tues., Nov. 5. WILLAMETTE FISHING Weekend fishing opportunities • Coho are beginning to show up in good numbers on the North Santiam, especially below Stayton. • Coho fishing is in full swing in the Sandy and Clackamas rivers. • Detroit Reservoir has been stocked with thousands of trout this year, many of which are still available for anglers to catch. And the cooler fall temperatures are putting trout on the bite. • Kokanee are putting on quite a spawning show in the Breitenbush arm of Detroit. Look for them near the day use area. • This time of year is great for observing Chinook salmon spawning in local rivers. Observe, don’t dis- turb. Some good places to view spawning fish on the McKenzie River are Cogswell Cr. behind McKenzie Hatchery (near the ODFW volunteer host trailer) and the nature trail near the water at Leaburg Hatchery (near the viewing platform). • Fall trout stocking continues in the Willamette Zone with these waterbodies scheduled to be stocked this week, Row River Nature Park, Canby Pond, Alton Baker Canoe Canal and Henry Hagg Lake. ELK RIVER: Chinook Temporary fishing regulations will be in place Oct. 1 – Dec. 31 for wild chinook salmon. For more informa- tion, please see the in-season regulation change tables here. A low-water closure of all fishing is now in place from the mouth of Swamp Creek to the Hwy 101 bridge and will be lifted after heavy and consistent rain give fish a chance to distribute throughout the river system. Fisheries biologists will monitor fish move- ment and the river flow forecast to make this determi- nation. This will likely be lifted in November. To check current river conditions, call 541-332- 0405. COOS RIVER BASIN: trout, marine perch species, salmon Fishing for rockfi sh inside the bay has been good near the submerged rock piles. Fishing is typically best near slack tide. Boat anglers are no longer able to harvest copper, quillback, or China rockfi sh for the remainder of the year because the catch limit has been reached on these species. A jig with a twister tail can be a great bait for catching rockfi sh. Most salmon anglers have put away the boats for the season. Th ere are still a few Chinook being caught near SOMAR to the forks of the Millicoma and South Fork Coos rivers. Salmon fi shing in Coos Bay continues to be decent one day and very slow the next day. Cross country: The Cottage Grove boys and girls cross country teams wrapped up their regular season last Wed., Oct. 23 at the Country Fair Classic 5k, held at Richardson Park just outside Eugene. Thirty teams were represented on the boys’ side and thirty-one on the girls’. Boys: freshman Jaden Owens led the way for the Lions, finishing sixteenth overall and setting a personal record with a time of 17:03.80. Senior Jimmy Talley returned for his first race in over a month, finishing thirtieth over- all with a time of 17:22.80. More results: junior Jaeden Thuesen (87th, 18:43.40), junior Maycol Pablo Herre- ra (133rd, 20:21.30), sophomore Andy Wiley (140th, 20:36.80), sophomore Ian Shepherd (157th, 21:49.20), sophomore McKenzie Baker (167th, 22:42.10), fresh- man Malaky Barr (173rd, 23:28.80), junior Calvin Wilke (174th, 24:03.80), senior Justin Francis (175th, 24:04.60). Girls: While only running six participants, the girls’ team had a highly successful race with all six runners set- ting personal or season records. Sophomores Evie Smith (42nd, 21:33.60), Piper Youngmayr (107th, 25:32.70), Hannah Cook (120th, 26:08.10) and freshman Helen Leal-Coronel (93rd, 24:39.90) all finished with their fast- est 5k times ever. Sophomore Eternity Reimche (43rd, 21:36.06) and senior Lizbeth Zarate-Hernandez (114th, 25:47.10) both ran their fastest races of the season. Both teams will look to carry this momentum into the 4A Sky-Em League Championships, which will be held Thurs., Oct. 31 at Lane Community College in Eugene. The runners should be familiar with the course as they last ran it on Sept. 14 at the Northwest Classic 5k. North Douglas Volleyball: The Warriors (21-9, 12-2) played three games in the Skyline League playoffs last week. They won their first matchup against Umpqua Valley 3-0 on Thurs., Oct. 24 before achieving the same result in the next round against Camas Valley on Sat., Oct. 26. In a barnburner final matchup, North Douglas took on league leaders Days Creek and narrowly lost 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 12-25, 10-25, 13-15) for their third loss on the sea- son to the Wolves. The seventh-ranked Warriors begin the state playoffs tonight against forty-third-ranked McKenzie. Football: Since starting the season 1-3, North Douglas (5-3, 4-1) has been on a roll, winning four consecutive games and scoring no fewer than thirty six points in any of those matchups. This streak was capped off by a 36- 20 home victory over Mapleton, allowing the Warriors to jump ahead of the Sailors in the Skyline standings and earn an automatic playoff berth. North Douglas earned a season-high ranking of tenth in the state and will look to carry their regular season momentum into Friday’s home league playoff with six- teenth-ranked Siletz Valley. The matchup will help deter- mine seeding for the state playoffs. Elkton Volleyball: The Elks finished the season strong, win- ning four of their final five games - including three in the league playoffs - to finish the season 13-9 overall, 9-5 in Skyline League play and with a ranking of nineteenth. In the league tournament, the team was led by seniors As- pyn Luzier (25 total kills) and Sadie Olson (50 total digs) as well as sophomore setter Natasha Shepherd (46 total assists). Elkton’s push through the final stretch of games earned them a third-place finish in the Skyline League and an opportunity to further their season in a play-in game for the state playoffs. The Elks’ win-or-go-home play-in is to- night at 5:45 p.m. against Central Christian in Redmond. Misc. football Yoncalla 51, Elkton 6: After losing three consecutive games, Yoncalla (3-5, 2-3) turned things around against a reeling Elkton team (2-5, 0-5) who lost their final five contests after starting the season 2-0. The Elks kept things close in the first half, trailing 14-6 in the mid second quarter, until a rash of turnovers by the Elks and big plays by Yoncalla gave the Eagles a comfort- able 38-6 halftime lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Though neither team qualified for the OSAA state playoffs, both teams will play a Special District 1 cross- over game on Fri., Nov. 1. Yoncalla will take on the Mo- hawk Mustangs (3-5, 2-3) and Elkton matches up with the Waldport Irish (2-5, 0-5). $500 S HOPPING S PREE at any of the following businesses.
