    COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2019 | 11A
Two-day climate series event to be held in Cottage Grove
On Friday, Nov. 8, from
7 to 9 p.m., there will be a
free screening of the multi
award-winning documen-
tary “A Plastic Ocean,” fol-
lowed by a presentation
from David Gardiepy.
Released in 2016 by ex-
plorers Craig Leeson and
Tanya Streeter and a team
of international scientists,
“Plastic Ocean” is a docu-
mentary film that demon-
strates the staggering scope
of the environmental disas-
ter affecting all the oceans
of the planet.
The team travelled to
20 locations around the
world over four years to ex-
plore the fragile state of the
oceans, discover alarming
truths about plastic pol-
lution and reveal working
solutions that can be ap-
plied now.
After the film, Gardiepy
will give a presentation on
recycling — both plastics
and curbside — as well as
discuss how waste driven
by over-consumerism is
impacting the planet and
ways to reduce our carbon
footprint.
Gardiepy, who was fea-
tured in a recent edition of
The Cottage Grove Sentinel,
founded the local nonprof-
it EcoGeneration to devel-
op collection solutions for
plastics in our community.
He hosts recycling efforts,
addressing the serious need
for plastic recycling options
in Lane County.
The film will be shown
at the Cottage Grove Com-
munity Center, 700 E Gibbs
Ave., in Cottage Grove.
Then, on Sat., Nov. 9,
there will be a plastics col-
lection event hosted by
EcoGeneration at the Cot-
tage Grove Armory, 628 E
Washington Ave., from 1 to
4 p.m.
EcoGeneration will be
collecting #2, 4 and 5 plas-
tics that are clean and label
free. Bring recyclable plas-
tics or simply drop by to
learn more about EcoGen-
eration’s collection program
or to get involved as a vol-
unteer.
Both free events are
hosted by Climate Action
CG, EcoGeneration, Forest
Web,and Sustainable Cot-
tage Grove.

unrealistic goals or con-
cerns.
“It could potentially
cause people to be con-
cerned about something
that isn’t even physically
possible,” he said.
Additional open houses
to discuss the changes are
planned for November,
though no dates are set in
stone.
The audit committee’s
final recommendations
are expected to be pre-
sented at the Dec. 20
Planning
Commission
meeting, at which point
more public comment
may be submitted.
Stewart encouraged the
public to attend the next
open house, learn about
the changes and feel free
to comment.
“I think it’s important
for people in the com-
munity to be involved
in the way the commu-
nity grows,” he said, “to
share their thoughts and
concerns and what their
hopes and aspirations are
for the community they
live in.”
Public comments are
not restricted to the open
house events. Comments
can be sent directly to
Stewart at pwdirector@
cottagegrove.org or City
Planner Amanda Fergu-
son at planner@cottage-
grove.org.
Codes
Along with code chang-
es, the committee has
recommended
adding
new definitions such as
“cottage clusters,” group-
ings of no fewer than
four detached housing
units;
“townhouses,”
partly defined as a dwell-
ing unit constructed in
a row of two or more at-
tached units; and “middle
hous-ing,” a classification
which includes duplex-
es, triplexes, quadplexes,
cottage clusters and town-
houses.
Stewart said that code
changes will allow for the
greater feasibility of cot-
tage clusters by making
criteria “clear and objec-
tive” while making the
developments available
for a full range of residen-
tial zones.
The potential for medi-
um density developments
in the community such
as multi-family homes
will also be opened up by
making projects finan-
cially viable.
Planning staff have also
done away with maxi-
mum density limits to
units per acre, numbers
which Stewart said could
unintentionally promote
