Local Sports Wrap-up
Cottage Grove
Volleyball: After an enthrall-
ing league-opening win against
Siuslaw nearly two weeks ago, the
Lions kept up their winning ways
last week, defeating Marshfield
3-1 (26-24, 25-19, 20-25, 25-15)
and Elmira 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-
9), both on the road, to go to 7-5
overall on the season and 3-0 in
league play.
The Lions upcoming matches
are Thurs., Oct. 3 at home against
Marist (1-8, 1-2) and Tues., Oct. 8
when they will travel to Florence
for their second match against
Siuslaw (6-5, 1-2).
Cross country: The Lions
hosted their only home meet of
the season two weeks ago at the
Harrier’s Challenge at Dorena
Reservoir and headed up to the
Portland area last Sat., Sept. 28
for the Nike Portland XC event
where 27 girls teams and 24 boys
teams participated in the divi-
sion three varsity 5,000 meters,
in which Cottage Grove was in-
cluded.
For the boys, four of their six
total runners achieved person-
al records, including freshman
Jaden Owens (17:34.60), junior
Maycol Pablo Herrera (20:47.00),
sophomore Brayden Russell
(21:45.30) and freshman Tyler
Russell (21:51.60). Junior Cal-
vin Wilke (23:55.20) set his 2019
season record and junior Jaden
Thuesen ran his fourth varsity 5k
of the year, finishing in 19:39.80.
The girls were nearly as suc-
cessful as sophomores Eternity
Reimche and Evie Smith once
again led the Lions pack, finishing
in 22:09.50 and 22:32.00, respec-
tively. Sophomore Kajsa Merz
(24:40.20) and senior Lizbeth Za-
rate-Hernandez (26:21.00) both
set their season records and, most
notably, freshman Helen Le-
al-Coronel set her new personal
record, finishing in 26:16.40, and
shaving a full 26 seconds off her
previous best.
The Lions next event will be
this Sat., Oct. 4 at the Oxford
Classic held at Drake Park in
Bend, Ore.
North Douglas
Football: Looking to carry mo-
mentum after a big week three
win against Bonanza, the War-
riors made a rainy drive to Lowell
(3-1, 1-0) last Fri., Sept. 27 and
lost 72-30, falling to 1-3 overall
on the season and 0-1 in league
play. One of North Douglas’
biggest matchups of the season
comes next week when they trav-
el West down Highway 38 to take
on Elkton on Fri., Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
Elkton
Football: Unlike their rivals in
Drain, the Elks’ season got off to a
strong 2-0 start, but experienced
a setback last Fri., Sept. 27 when
they made a long away trip to
Mapleton, losing 52-6 in the cold
and rain to a still-undefeated Sail-
ors squad (4-0, 1-0). The Elks are
now 2-1 overall on the season and
0-1 in league play. They will com-
pete with North Douglas next
week when both teams will look
to get their first league victory of
the 2019 season.
Volleyball: Since a Skyline
League opening loss to North
Douglas on Sept. 17, the Elks
have rattled off three consecutive
league wins against Riddle 3-1
(25-20, 19-25, 25-8, 25-23) on
Sept. 24, and Glendale 3-0 (25-
5, 25-10, 25-6) and New Hope
Christian 3-0 (25-6, 25-12, 25-
15) on Sept. 26. In the latter two
matches, senior Aspyn Luzier
combined for 23 kills, nine digs,
and six aces while fellow senior
Sam McCall contributed 13 aces,
seven kills and 10 digs.
The Elks now sit with a tidy
8-2 overall record and are 7-1
in league play, their only loss
coming to the aforementioned
North Douglas. Elkton takes on
Umpqua Valley Christian (4-7,
2-6) on Thurs., Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.
before participating in the 2019
Eagle Invitational at Damascus
Christian on Sat., Oct 6.
Yoncalla
Football: The Eagles (2-2, 1-0)
stayed tough after consecutive
blowout losses to Triad and Cam-
as Valley, taking down Oakridge
(2-2, 0-1) 67-44 in a high-scoring
away game that gave Yoncalla a
win in their first league matchup
of the year.
Yoncalla’s next contest is Fri.,
Oct. 4 at 7 p.m., a tough home
matchup against league rival
Lowell (3-1, 1-0) who is com-
ing off a decisive victory against
North Douglas last week.
Volleyball: The Eagles (4-
8, 1-6) had lost back-to-back
league games to Camas Valley
and Umpqua Valley Christian
entering this past week, but were
able to right the ship with a five-
set win over Riddle 3-2 (17-25,
25-16, 25-23, 16-25, 15-13) on
Thurs., Sept. 26. It was Yoncalla’s
first win in Skyline League play.
With two more league matches
this week, at New Hope Chris-
tian (1-8, 1-7) and home against
Pacific (4-8, 1-6), the Eagles have
an opportunity to get the rest of
their season pointed in the right
direction.
