Nicki Derrick (2) and Natalie Draeger (8) are two of the
senior leaders for a talented North Douglas volleyball
team.
For a team with such a domi-
nant recent history, North Doug-
las volleyball (13-6 overall, 6-1
league) has already seen its rel-
ative share of ups and downs
throughout this 2019 season.
It was a day of highs and lows
last Sat., Sept. 28 as the Warriors
participated in the all-day McK-
enzie RPI Tournament in Vida,
Ore., ultimately splitting their
four matches and ending the day
with a loss in the consolation fi-
nal to fourth-ranked Damascus
Christian (13-2, 4-0).
“They always battle. I’m always
proud of them because they don’t
ever just give up and we haven’t
done that all year, no matter if
we’re down by 10, they’re fighting
the whole way till the game’s over,”
said head coach Emily Reed after
the tournament.
North Douglas started the day
locked in. Taking on the same
Damascus team they would lose
to later in the day, the Warriors
came out focused and energized,
defeating the Eagles in straight
sets, 2-0.
“When we played Damascus in
the morning, that was a dominant
performance. Everyone played
great and they were loud and had
energy,” said Reed, though the
team still had a long day ahead of
them.
“I know they were tired by the
end of the day. I get it, we played
four matches, but when we played
Damascus again we were like a

Junior forward/midfielder Sawyer Weybright was central to much of the action in last week’s league opener against
Marshfield.

The Sky-Em season is getting
off to a particularly successful
start for many of the fall Cot-
tage Grove sports teams.
In their first league clash of
the year last Tuesday, Sept. 24
the Cottage Grove girls soccer
team defeated the Marshfield
Pirates handily at Don King
Field by a final score of 4-0.
Coming off of back-to-back
close losses to Astoria and
Phoenix, the Lions (4-4 overall,
2-0 league) bounced back and
took care of business against a
Marshfield team that has man-
aged only one victory thus far
this season (1-6-1, 1-1).
Continuing a trend from
other recent games, the team
seemed to play with a touch of
anxiety out of the gate, unsure
of their next move when find-
ing themselves with the ball in
space. However, the girls re-
laxed after junior forward Saw-
yer Weybright tidily placed a
ball in the bottom left corner of
goal in the 24th minute of the
first half.
The second goal would come
only a minute later when ju-
nior midfielder Chanel Leach
scored again, allowing the Li-
ons to take a 2-0 lead into half-
time.

Breakouts on offense
not enough for Lions
By Nick Snyder

In what has been a tough
season thus far for the Lions,
things didn’t get much easier
in their first league matchup
of the year.
Last Friday, Sept. 27 the
visiting Marshfield Pirates
secured an easy victory, win-
ning 78-29 in both teams’
first Sky-Em league game.
The Pirates began the
game sloppy, pushing the
opening kickoff out-of-
bounds for a penalty and
exhibiting some confusion
and miscommunication on
defense. The mistakes, how-
ever, were quickly corrected.
Marshfield jumped out to
a 28-0 lead early in the sec-
ond quarter on the backs of
two touchdown plays of 50-
plus yards. Facing another
deep hole and the nearly im-
possible task of competing
with only 14 players in uni-
form for the game, Cottage
