“Oliver!”

DAMIEN SHERWOOD/COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL
Backdropped by a picturesque Dorena Lake, musician Hunter Noack performs classical pieces for an
audience of more than 100 on Saturday at Baker Bay Park. The summer concert series, “In a
Landscape,” celebrates both classical music and the outdoors by staging concerts in forests, fields,
deserts and mountain tops. Audience members listened with wireless headphones, free to wander
the park to the ambience of Noack’s performance.
Initial attack resources respond to lightning fires, camp fires
Last week, resources
had responded to 10 fires
across the Umpqua Na-
tional Forest. Locations of
the starts included: Four in
the Diamond Lake Ranger
District, four in the Tiller
Ranger District and one in
the Cottage Grove Rang-
er District, which was an
abandoned campfire. The
largest fire was estimated
at 2/10 of an acre.
With cooler tempera-
tures and additional pre-
cipitation, fire activity
remained minimal but
initial attack resources
continue to respond to
any new smoke reports.
Fire managers had
scheduled a fixed-wing
aircraft
reconnaissance
flight over forest lands;
this week, a clearing and
drying trend is forecasted.
In spite of rainfall that
was received with Friday
and Saturday’s thunder-
storms, public-use restric-
tions will remain in place.
On
average,
hu-
man-caused
wildfires
make up 87 percent of all
wildfires annually.
The use of fire restric-
tions helps to minimize the
number of human-caused
fires firefighters respond
to. It is imperative to
maintain awareness of fire
danger levels and current

Directory
fire restrictions to help
keep communities safe,
particularly those in rural
locations.
Remember: Even if a
campfire is in a campfire
ring, it must be completely
extinguished before leav-
ing the camping area.
