Many of the volunteers involved in the carousel project in a photo taken Aug. 1, exactly two years
since the mast was raised into position with the help of volunteers and EPUD crews.
D
edicated volunteers have
donated some 7,000 hours
of time to a dream to bring
the carousel back to South Lane
County.
On Aug. 1, 2017, volunteers with
the aid and help of EPUD crew and
a crane, raised the mast to an ab-
solute vertical level position, mea-
suring and drilling holes to attach
the mast to the platform. The mast
supports the entire revolving car-
ousel.
That was one of the first steps
in the total restoration of the 1929
Hershall 36-foot, 34-animal me-
nagerie carousel.
Two years later, the restoration
of the carousel is almost complete.
Testing of the electronic com-
puterized drive system is still on-
going and some lighting must be
added. It is indefinite when the
carousel will be certified by a ride
inspector and passed by OSHA,
but the carousel will be open to the
public soon.
“We are approaching donations
from industry businesses — elec-
tronics, bearings, wood, etc., near
the $90,000 mark,” said Don Wil-
liams, Board Chair of the Friends
of the Cottage Grove Carousel,
“along with 7,000 work hours by
electricians, millwrights, painters,
carvers and other crafted people.
Many thanks to King Estates for
allowing us use of part of their
warehouse in the Industrial Park
in Cottage Grove as a long-term
temporary home for the carousel.
“And it is donations from folks
in our community that have
bought the less expensive items,
such as paint, advertising and pro-
motions. Once again, there are no
paid employees — this is 100 per-
cent volunteer group of dedicated
individuals.”
Upcoming fundraisers to sup-
port the carousel include:
• Men from SURF, a musical
fundraiser for the carousel, will be
held Sunday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 6
p.m. at Calvary Chapel in Cottage
Grove.
• A golf tournament benefitting
the carousel tees off Sept. 21. For
details, contact Linda at 541-913-
9586 or Donald Williams at 541-
942-4752.
The Friends of the Cottage
Grove Carousel is a 501(c)(3) non-
profit organization working to
acquire funding for a permanent
home for the carousel.
