this. I get to be back with
my girls!” said Reed, who
also teaches fi rst and sec-
ond grade.
Saying
that
North
Douglas volleyball has
enjoyed recent success is
an understatement. The
team, even with an annu-
ally changing roster, has
not lost a league game
since the 2013 calendar
year. With that magnitude
of success, it would be
understandable for a new
coach to feel the pressure
of the past. Reed says she
can feel it, but more from
her own competitive-
ness and strong desire to
continue winning trends.
Reed, originally from
Oakridge, is a former
three-sport athlete and
volleyball state champion
herself. But as the archi-
tect of the middle school’s
recent dominance, she’s
excited and hopeful for
the future of North Doug-
las Volleyball.
“All that talent has
moved to the high school
so I feel like we’ve been
successful from like sixth
grade up. It’s really excit-
ing to know how much
talent I have in that group
... I feel like the success
we’ve had, we always
look at our goals as being
to be the league champs

and to make it to the state
tournament and I feel like
with the talent we have
that’s totally feasible for
us to have those lofty
goals.”
A few miles west on
Highway 38, Jeremy
Lockhart will use the
foundation of experi-
ence he’s built over the
last decade plus when he
takes over as head foot-
ball coach at Elkton High
School.
“This is a great oppor-
tunity for me. I’m blessed
to be able to step in and
take on the challenge and
do the best I can and they
have confi dence in me,
which is fantastic, so I’m
hoping to not let anybody
down,” said Lockhart
when asked about his new
position.
Lockhart, who is from
Klamath Falls, spent
much of the past 13
years in Eugene where
he gained valuable ex-
perience as a volunteer
coach for track and fi eld
and cross country at Kelly
Middle School and Willa-
mette High School.
He came to Elkton last
year as a teacher, a time
when there were no open
coaching positions. Lock-
hart began volunteering
at the middle school level
and now, after one year of
getting to know the Elk-
ton community, relishes
the opportunity that’s in
front of him.
“The kids here are fan-
tastic. That’s one thing
that I noticed my fi rst year
teaching here. It is a won-
derful community when it
comes to how this com-
munity raises the kids and
we all do it together and
I’m just really fortunate,”
said Lockhart. “It’s such
a great opportunity that
once I saw this coaching
position available, it was
something for me to dive
deeper into this communi-
ty and help it out as much
as possible.”
While Elkton football
hasn’t experienced the
level of success of North
Douglas volleyball they
are nonetheless on a run
of two consecutive win-
ning seasons. However,
amidst coaching chang-
es and a large amount of
roster turnover, Lockhart
feels relaxed heading into
the season.
“I’ve been informed
that this is a brand new
slate, it’s a new team. I
think we’ve lost nine se-
niors from last year which
is pretty much our entire
starting lineup so, you
know, this year’s defi -
nitely a new start, a fresh
start ... Of course, I would
love to be successful and I
just hope these kids have
success, but we’re gonna
have a fresh start, we’re
gonna try to have fun,
we’ll make sure the kids
are learning and growing
and then I will consider it
a very successful year,”
Lockhart said.
Both Reed for North
Douglas volleyball and
Lockhart for Elkton foot-
ball have yet to appoint
assistant coaches to their
respective staffs.

COTTAGE GROVE
POND: Trout, warmwa-
ter species
Was last stocked the
week of April 8 with
1,500 legal-size rainbow
trout. Cottage Grove
Ponds are open to year-
round fi shing and via an
asphalt pathway behind
the truck scales on Row
River Road. In addition
to fi shing, these ponds
also off er wildlife view-
ing opportunities and a
fi shing dock is available
on-site.
COTTAGE GROVE
RESERVOIR: Trout,
warmwater species
Was last stocked
the week of April 29
with 5,000 trophy-size
rainbow trout. Cottage
Grove Reservoir is south
of Cottage Grove and is
open to fi shing all year.
Lakeside boat ramp is
now open.
DETROIT RESER-
VOIR: Trout, kokanee
Th is large reservoir
was stocked in mid-July
with about 5,000 larger
trophy-size rainbow
trout. Fishing has been
very good of late for
both trout and kokanee
with warmer tempera-
tures and more food
available. Anglers are
catching most trout
between the surface and
40 feet down, kokanee
below that. Currently,
the reservoir is down
only about 13 feet,
which means the fi shing
conditions will be very
good this entire year. All
boat ramps should be
available to launch boats
at this time.
DEXTER RESER-
VOIR: Trout
Was last stocked in
mid-April with 5,000
trophy-size rainbow
trout. Dexter Reservoir
near Lowell is visible
from Hwy 58. Boat and
bank access is available
from state and county
parks. Parking and bank
access are also available
from the causeway near
Lowell. Largemouth bass
and some smallmouth
are also available to an-
glers in this reservoir.
DORENA RESER-
VOIR: Trout, warmwa-
ter
Dorena Reservoir is
east of Cottage Grove
on Row River Road and
is open to fi shing all
year. Trout and warm-
water fi sh are available.
Baker Bay boat ramp is
accessible at the current
reservoir elevation.
FALL CREEK: Trout
Was last stocked the
week of July 15 with
1,200 legal-size rainbow
trout. Fall Creek is open
all year for trout. Begin-
ning Nov. 1, anglers may
only use lures and arti-
fi cial fl ies. Five hatchery
trout and an additional
two wild trout may be
harvested daily in the
river. Below Fall Creek
Dam the creek is open
all year for hatchery
Chinook, hatchery steel-
head and wild steelhead
greater than 24-inches.
