Local musical groups croon to benefit carousel project
T
wo popular local
musical groups do-
nated their talent,
harmonies and passion
during a benefit concert
at Cottage Grove’s Calva-
ry Chapel on Sunday, July
21, to raise money for the
Cottage Grove Carousel
Project.
In the third performance
of the Carousel’s monthly
concert series, the musi-
cians led concert-goers
down memory lane filling
the church sanctuary with
a mix of rock, pop and
folk cover songs from the
1960s, 1970s and offering
a few more contemporary
songs.
It was the first time the
two groups shared the
same stage and their infor-
mal style created an inti-
mate atmosphere that felt
like a large house concert.
Jackie Jae and Jason
Cowsill opened the con-
cert, singing their harmo-
ny-driven hits from the
past and a few from the
present. Jae sang lead on
most of the songs with
Cowsill’s
between-song
comments creating giggles
among the crowd.
The Eugene couple plays
in venues throughout the
Pacific Northwest, includ-
ing Saginaw Vineyard.
Cowsill’s father, Bob, was
part of the famous sing-
ing family that inspired
the 1970s television show,
“The Partridge Family.”
The finale of their set
was Jae’s powerful rendi-
tion of Janis Joplin’s “Me
and Bobby McGee.”
After intermission, Cal-
vary Creek took the stage
to sing a mix of songs that
were at the top of the Bill-
board charts when first re-
leased. The band performs
the songs close to the same
familiar arrangements that
made them famous.
The band performs reg-
ularly in the community at
venues such as the summer
concert series in Bohemia
Park, Bohemia Mining
Days, Saginaw Vineyard, as
well as recent appearances
in the Creswell Fourth of
July and BMD parades.
Calvary Creek ended
their set paying homage to
The Cowsills’ biggest 1967
hit, “The Rain, The Park
and Other Things” (with
the familiar chorus “I love
the flower girl.”)
The concert ended with
a joint performance of
“Bus Stop” and “I’m a Be-
liever.” Not wanting the
magic to end as the au-

dience dispersed, Calva-
ry Creek’s lead singer Jeff
Smith and Cowsill sponta-
neously sang The Cowsills’
biggest hit, “Hair” from the
1968 Broadway musical of
the same name.
Don Williams, president
of the Friends of the Cot-
tage Grove Carousel, said
he was pleased and thrilled
with the harmonies of both
groups.
“These monthly concerts
bring people together and
showcase local musicians
for a good cause,” Williams
said. “I encourage those
who love the Beach Boys’
music to attend the next
concert on Aug. 25 and en-
joy a ‘surf party’ with the
Cottage Grove band, ‘Men
from S.U.R.F.’”
