Kickin’ It With — and dunkin’ — the Cops
PHOTOS BY DAMIEN SHERWOOD/COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL
For its third year running, the
Kickin’ It with the Cops event
was held behind City Hall on
Friday where attendees were
treated to BBQ, games and
family fun. “Last year I think
we served over 300 hot dogs,”
said Cottage Grove Police
Chief Scott Shepherd. “This
year we’re shooting for 400.”
The event featured balloon
twisters, a bicycle and equip-
ment raffle, an armored
Humvee for kids to climb on
and a dunk tank reserved for
city officials. “I’d like [people]
to know that we’re approach-
able and that we’re just peo-
ple in our community,”
Shepherd said. “I hope that
this continues to grow and
more and more people come.”

CG Historical
Society hosts
new exhibit
The Cottage Grove
Historical Society is
presenting its exhib-
it, “The Row That
Named a Valley.” This
exhibit outlines the
events that gave the
Row River and Valley
its name. While many
outside the area as-
sume the name is pro-
nounced “rō” like row
your boat, newcomers
quickly learn from lo-
cals that the name is
pronounced “rou” as
in a fi ght or ruckus.
Common local lore
only tells part of the
real story behind the
name and perpetuates
some common falla-
cies. Using transcripts
of grand jury and tri-
al testimony, as well
as other historical re-
sources, this exhibit
provides a compre-
hensive outline of the
events that led to the
death of George Clark.
After seeing the evi-
dence and testimony,
you be the judge.
What was really be-
hind the animosity?
Was the shooting justi-
fi ed? Did the right per-
son go to jail?
Each year, the Part-
ners in History — made
up of several local his-
torical non-profi ts and
supporting groups —
organizes a series of
historical displays and
exhibits for the com-
munity. One partner,
the Cottage Grove
Public Library, gen-
erously provides an
accessible and visible
display space. This
exhibit is designed, re-
searched and created
by volunteers with the
Cottage Grove Histor-
ical Society. The cost
of material is paid for
by member dues and
donations.
The community is
encouraged to visit the
exhibit and to consid-
er joining the Cottage
Grove Historical So-
ciety or volunteer with
the organization.
This exhibit will be
up through July at the
Cottage Grove Pub-
lic Library, 700 Gibbs
Street.
