Our Mission: Th e Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce promotes economic vitality through advocacy and collaboration with its members and the larger community.
Travis Palmer,
Executive Director
Director’s Note
Participation is the key to change and
I’d like to personally thank the 28 local
businesses who each participated in their
own way with the Oregon Gran Fondo
cycling event this last Saturday. This
was the 8 th year of the Gran Fondo in
Cottage Grove and for the fi rst time, we
saw signifi cant engagement from local
businesses. In past years, there have
been many complaints that the road
being closed downtown hurts Main
Street business activity on the day of
the event. Those complaints were valid
and organizations like the Chamber of
Commerce, Main Street Program, EBID
(Economic and Business Improvement
District) and Travel Lane County have
been listening. We worked hard to address
everyone’s concerns and we think this year
was a dramatic improvement over past
years.
Activity is a key factor in drawing
pedestrian traffi c into a confi ned area.
When the road is closed for an event and
there’s very little visible activity, there’s
nothing to attract people into the area.
2019 Chamber Board of Directors , Advisors and Staff:

On the other hand, when there’s a lot of
people walking around and looking at
all of the special items on display, other
people take notice and want to come into
the area to see what’s going on. Activity
creates attraction and never before have
local businesses worked harder to help
themselves and each other during the
Gran Fondo. Twenty-seven businesses
participated in the “Show Your Bib”
promotion where cyclists, their support
teams and spectators could walk into a
business, show their race credentials and
get anything from 10% off merchandise
or even free chocolates and beer! Several
local restaurants agreed to accept meal
vouchers from event participants so they
could try our local cuisine and many of
the shops on Main Street set up sidewalk
sale displays to attract more attention to
their businesses. Cascade Home Center
held an open house barbeque to show off
their new historic photo window displays
that they recently installed with the help
of the Cottage Grove Partners in History.
You can’t change the score of the game
while you’re sitting in the bleachers. I’m
extremely proud and thankful for all of
the businesses who got into the game this
year and tried to make a diff erence. If
there was even a slight improvement over
past years, we should challenge ourselves
to put in twice as much eff ort next time.
We should talk to the businesses that didn’t
participate and let them know that their
presence aff ects everyone’s success.
As citizens of a community, we are
responsible for our own successes and
failures. Each of us has a role to play in
our own success and we can play a role in
helping each other succeed if we choose
to. My sincere thanks go out to all of the
people who participate in the betterment
of Cottage Grove. When you participate,
you set an example for the rest of the
world to follow.
