Enough smiles to go around

Students from Harrison Elementary School got their first glimpse of Cottage Grove’s carousel project May 16 as volunteer staff
helped them to saddles and distributed tickets for future free rides. About 150 students in total are slated to visit the ware-
house over two weeks. “They can see what’s going on and that it’s real … and that something is going to happen out there,”
said organizer Russ McGuire. “So they can look forward to that.” Though not yet ready for public use, the project is nearing
completion and Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel hope to have it up and running this summer as a leasing agreement with
Brad’s Cottage Grove Chevrolet moves ahead.

Safe Haven to host open house Saturday
Cottage Grove Safe Hav-
en, Inc., will host an open
house this Saturday, May
25, to launch its sober-liv-
ing home for women.
The house will operate
as transitional housing for
women after leaving re-
covery for alcoholism and
addiction.
It will provide residents
with a safe place to pre-
pare for a productive life
without having to return to
their former environments.
After several years of
searching, a house at 850
E Quincy has been rented
in Cottage Grove that can
house five women and a
house manager -- plus the
rent is affordable.
The community of Cot-
tage Grove is invited to at-
tend this open house and
to celebrate the beginning
of this service to the pub-
lic. The open house will be
from 1 to 3 p.m.
With a better chance of
recovery from alcoholism
and addiction, the residents
can become productive cit-
izens, recidivism and crime
will be reduced, and fami-
lies will be reunited.
Snacks will be served and
there will be guided tours
of the house.
