In some instances, howev- er, downed power lines were hidden beneath the snow, which make them hard to differentiate from phone or cable lines. “They’re all power lines,” said City Manager Richard Meyers. “That’s how we had to treat them.” As workers hurry to return power to the community, another hurdle may be just around the corner. Heavy rains over the weekend put the city’s sewage treatment plant at full capacity, raising concerns that a quick melting of the snow could cause overflow. Two sewage pumps report- edly stopped working for a time during the deluge, but the city quickly dispatched electricians to fix the prob- lem and is counting on a cold night. “Hopefully it melts slowly,” said Meyers. Meanwhile, the city’s wa- ter system continues to flow normally, though Meyers said, “We’re watching it very care- fully.” Emergency services were also tied up responding to the sudden snow flurry. Po- lice and other first responders were kept busy with constant welfare check requests and responding to motor vehicle accidents in the area. Amid the disarray, Cot- tage Grove local Remington Moore, 21, took advantage of his day off work to help vehi- cles caught in the snow. “I’ve just been driving around. I’ve helped 22 people today,” Moore said Monday afternoon. “They’ve got those little 2-wheel drive cars, so I’ve been tugging them a little bit and getting them back on the road.” Moore found most people stuck in the center of the road where snow plows had pushed the snow away and could be edged out with his Chevy Sil- verado. “I even pulled a semi out at Walmart earlier,” he said. The expansive storm brought snow to the Northern Rockies and Sierra Nevada and spread across the Midwest and into the Northeast United States by Wednesday. Northern California and ar- eas of southwestern Oregon are simultaneously on no- tice for potential flooding.
