Camas Valley edges out Elkton
Hornets’ free throws
with .5 seconds left lift
team past Elks
By Zach Silva

It was the Spider-Man point-
ing at Spider-Man meme come
to life on Saturday night in Elk-
ton as the Elks hosted Camas
Valley.
The two teams of similar
makeup (both coaches have
described their teams as hav-
ing athletes but not specifical-
ly basketball players), similar
optimism (both coaches also
are excited for the young play-
ers on their roster) and similar
rankings (Elkton is ranked 57th
in 1A while Camas Valley sits
at 51st) matched up evenly in a
fittingly close game that saw the
Hornets edge the Elks 40-38.
“That’s kind of been our sea-
son,” said Elkton head coach
Gary Trout. “We get right there
and then we go back and then
we get right there and then go
back. Putting stuff together and
getting consistent play has been
a struggle for us all season.”
It was, unsurprisingly, a sim-
ilar sentiment from Camas Val-
ley head coach Chris Sexton.
“I think that’s sort of how our
season has gone, too,” said Sex-
ton, a third year coach. “I think
we’re on the same page but the
only difference is (Gary Trout)
has done it forever. He’s a really
good coach and I’m still second
guessing if I’m actually doing
this right.”
Tied going into the fourth
quarter, it was Trystn Woody
jumpstarting the scoring for
the Elks in the quarter with five
points to give the team a five
point advantage. After a Cam-
as Valley rally, including a pair
of jumpers from the Hornets’
Justin Standley, the Elks were
down three with 17 seconds to
play in the game. It was Elkton’s
Jaydn Woody who got open
and hit a three to tie the game.
On the final possession of the
game Camas Valley’s Standley
was fouled going for a lay-up
with .5 seconds to play. Stand-
ley hit both free throws and fin-
ished the game with six points,
all of which came in the final
five minutes of play.
On Friday Camas Valley lost
to Riddle 68-36 on the team’s
senior night. So Sexton talk-
ed to Standley, his only senior
starter, about having a senior
night do-over.
“That’s not a fun senior night
for our team and so I felt a lit-
tle bit that this was Justin’s se-
nior night. He’s kind of my one
senior,” said Sexton. “He has
started every game this season
Area Sports Recap:
Cottage Grove Girls Wrestling:
Over the weekend the team
wrestled at the OSAA Girls
Southern Division Tournament.
Raina Herzog was named cham-
pion in her weight class and will
be competing at state. Herzog
won by fall in the semifinal and
by a 7-1 decision in first place
match. Richelle Rolfe finished
in sixth place for Cottage Grove.
The Lions finished ninth out of
53 teams competing.
Sabrina James, Arleth Serra-
tos-Hernandez, Hannah Cook,
Adelle Kent and Leila Kenne-
dy-Miles also scored for CGHS.
Cottage Grove Wrestling Club:
Wrestlers ranging from el-
ementary age to high school
competed at the 2019 Oregon
Kids State Tournament over the
weekend in Corvallis.
The club got second place
for me so I was really glad for
him to hit those shots and he
did a great job.”
For Elkton, Trout was pleased
with the team’s effort after their
ninth straight league loss.
“I’m real pleased with how
the kids battled because in the
past… when it started to slip
away we’d let it go and then the
lead gets to be 10, 20. So I’m
real pleased that we kept bat-
tling back,” said Trout.
To finish the season, the Elks
will face New Hope Christian
on Tuesday (after The Sentinel’s
print deadline) and then will
face North Douglas and Days
Creek, two teams at the top of
the league and in all of 1A.
“I want to see them battle
like they did tonight. That’s all
we can do and that’s all I can
ask for,” said Trout. “Send our
seniors off battling.”
