It was not the second half that
Yoncalla wanted.
After a nine-point advantage
in the second quarter, the Eagles
(7-14, 2-7 Skyline) scored nine
points total in the second half
of Tuesday’s home game against
New Hope Christian (7-11, 3-4)
as they recorded a 37-28 loss.
“We just have no intensity out
there, we didn’t rebound and
we played no defense. We went
through the motions,” said Yon-
calla head coach Nick Edera. “I
don’t know, so I guess it’s my job
to find some kind of intensity
and find the small victories the
rest of the season.”
After a slow first quarter for
LIONS
both sides, the Eagles had an 8-6
advantage. Able to get some ear-
ly second quarter buckets, the
team had a 15-6 advantage mid-
way through the quarter before
the visiting Warriors were able
to find success in the form of a
pair of three pointers from Lau-
ren Huttema.
While Yoncalla led at half-
time, a 12-2 run to start the third
quarter put New Hope Christian
up for good.
“I think the key was we went
in and talked about rebounds.
Like, [Yoncalla was] getting re-
bound after rebound and so we
talked about making sure that
they didn’t touch a rebound so
that was key,” said New Hope
head coach Kim Zumhofe on
what the team talked about at
halftime. “And just kind of ratch-
eting it up on defense. And our
shots falling, that always helps.”
New Hope Christian was led
by Jessi Loper who finished with
a game high 16 points including
10 in the second half, outscoring
all of Yoncalla during that time.
“Our starters and our first
couple off the bench got to fig-
ure something out. We’re not
even getting through any pro-
gressions of our offense, we get a
high screen and that’s it, nothing
else is coming,” said Edera about
the team’s lack of offense before
discussing the team’s defense.
“Our defensive intensity has got
to step up a lot or else it’s not go-
ing to be a pretty last couple of
weeks.”
Yoncalla was led in scoring
by Shaunasi Hardy and Kaleigh
Soto who each finished with six
points.
The team finished out the
week with a 44-43 win over Rid-
dle on Friday before falling to
