WARRIORS from B1
just kind of kept switching them
back and forth on him. And I
said, anytime he gives it up, stay
with him chest-to-chest, deny
the ball, don’t let him have it
back. The kid is extremely quick
so he was still getting it back but
they did a great job of fighting
through and trying to get on
him and just limiting his offen-
sive ability. I mean, the kid is
scoring 30 a game, nearly. He’s a
player. The kid is talented.”
Limiting the Riddle offensive
attack, North Douglas opened
the game with a balanced scor-
ing attack that saw six different
players score two points in the
first quarter. Outscoring the
Irish 16-7 in the second quar-
ter, the Warriors were able to
slow down the game and focus
on finding easy shots as they
worked the clock. Switching
to an offense with four North
Douglas players all above the
three point line, the team took
Riddle out of their 2-3 defense
and turned the aggressive Irish
defense into open back door lay-
ups.
“They were pressuring us so
much that those backdoors were
(open), it was all day. I said,
‘We’re shooting nothing but lay-
ups. If it’s not there, don’t throw
it. And if the guy is catching
you, dribble it out and we’ll set
it back up,” said Vancil.
Riddle cut their deficit to six
points in the fourth quarter but
the Warriors continued to come
up with an answer. Continuous-
ly getting to the rim and draw-
ing fouls at a Harden-esque rate
in the fourth quarter was Parks
who had 12 points in the quar-
ter and was eight-of-eight from
the line.
“This week I had been work-
ing free throws a lot more. We
shot a lot of free throws this
week because we knew our per-
centages have been real down,”
said Parks. “Just going to the
line I felt like I had a lot of con-
fidence because of all this week’s
shooting and then when I went
to the line I knew, these two are
going in.” After finishing sev-
en-of-21 from the line a week
ago in a game against Elkton,
the Warriors finished the night
11-of-13.
Tanner Parks and Jake Ger-
rard each had 10 points for
North Douglas.
With the victory, the Warriors
have now won five games in a
row and are tied for first at the
top of the league.
“Our goal is to make playoffs
and win a league championship.
We want to do that. And if we
keep playing like this, we have a
chance to be in every game we
play,” said Vancil.
The Warriors take on New
Hope Christian next Friday
before facing Umpqua Valley
Christian, a team the Warriors
gave up a late nine-point lead to
earlier this season, at home on
Saturday.
