138-pound weight class in a
score of of 13-8. Going into the
third round, the match was tied
at six a piece before Soto-Cruz
dug deep for the victory.
“Fernando tonight is what
we’ve been waiting for and he’s
still only a junior. We thought we
were going to get it last year as a
sophomore and he sometimes
overthinks things but tonight
it wasn’t like he was thinking
about moves, he was wrestling,”
said coach Chris Joyce. “He
looked really smooth.”

against Creswell, there was
more than just a victory on the

ated from CGHS as state wres-

“Stanley Cup,” the two teams
wrestled with the winner getting
a WWE-styled championship
belt.
“We made a little trophy so
that year after year we can pass
this trophy back and forth,” said
Herzog. And this year, the belt
will reside in Cottage Grove af-
ter the Lions recorded a domi-
nant performance and defeated
the Bulldogs 66-18.
“I thought the whole team
was a lot more explosive off the
whistle. From Drew to Fernan-
do and as a whole team we came
out and wrestled and wrestled
well,” said Herzog. “I was look-

happy and impressed with what
