SKYLINE STANDINGS CUT FOR SPACE
Warriors cruise to pair of wins at Invitational
victory. It was never in doubt
as the team used their speed
to go up 15-0 early in the fi rst
quarter.
By Zach Silva
“We talked about all week
zsilva@cgsentinel.com
in practice we’re going to push
the ball on them and make
Th e North Douglas boys them run with us because we’re
had a simple plan on the fi rst a fast team. Th at’s what our
night of their Winter Invita- plan was, that’s what we did
tional night: run, run and run and it worked out well,” said
some more.
North Douglas head coach
Friday against a Lowell team Tyler Vancil. “Let’s try to beat
that features height, and not them down the fl oor so we can
speed, the goal was to win score layups when they’re not
the game with their fast break in there. Because as you can
which they were able to do as see, the big guy, he’s good at
they raced their way to a 56-33
blocking
shots.
He’s got long arms
and does a good
job at blocking the
ball.”
Th e fast break
was oft en led by
the Cal Parks who
would either score
– he had six points
on the quarter – or

rard nine of his 12 points in
the fi rst quarter.
“Th at’s just kind of what
(Parks) does,” said Vancil.
“He’s quicker than most
guys on the court all the
time. So he’s trying to get up
the court because if he’s got
one guy to beat, he’s prob-
ably going to beat him.”
Parks fi nished with a game-
high 17 points.
Aft er a nearly even sec-
ond quarter of play, the
Warriors leaned on their
starters to close out the
game in the third quarter
and the start of the fourth
quarter. Tanner Parks add-
ed nine points for North
Douglas.
“Th ey know how to run
the fl oor and to get it up
into the plays we’re running
and they play well together.
Especially those fi rst fi ve,
they play really well togeth-
er. Th at’s basically it. Th ey
know the off ense better so
they kind of fl ow together
better,” said Vancil.
While the starting group
sealed the deal, it opened up
minutes for the end of the
bench including JV players
who swing up to varsity. Th e
JV team has not had any games
this season.
“Th ose guys don’t have a lot
of minutes on the fl oor… One
of them doesn’t even play bas-
ketball but just wanted to come
out his senior year and he does
a good job,” said Vancil. “But
they got to know every game
be ready to go because we don’t
have a lot of guys and if we got
into foul trouble and need to
throw somebody in there we’re
going to throw them in there.”
On Saturday North Douglas
defeated Mapleton 80-45. Th e
Warriors outscored the Sail-
ors 51-20 in the second half.
Gerrard led the team with 28
points while Koldan Frieze
had 17 and Cal Parks 10.

going to have a problem with
this. But we started, for some
reason, standing around, I
don’t know why,” said Parker.
“I think they panicked a little
bit. I don’t know, maybe we
should have just kept running
our off ense. Who knows. And
they realized what they were
doing. I mean, they were like,
‘Why did I just stand there?
Why didn’t I make my cut?’
So they know. It’s a learning
experience.”
On Saturday against Low-
ell, the Elks ran past Lowell
for a 42-24 win.
Elkton will resume play
on Dec. 27 at the McKenzie
Hoops Classic before league
play begins on January 4.
